I am interested in getting a good detector for about $250 - 300. Nothing to fancy but if there are some within that range that can tune for gold/platinum/etc. or go underwater I'd like to hear about them. Thanks a bunch. Chase

I have heard Bounty Hunter and Whites are good all around detectors. I'm interested in finding anything but would one detector favor coins and jewelry over say bulkier objects like pocket knives and such?

Garrett has a new ACE 250 just out for $250.00 which looks like a real hot new detector. Lots of great features.

For that kind of money you ain't going to get a detector that does all that unless you buy used and the pickins will still be slim. For a good all around detector for land use take a look at the new Ace 250.
Gold detectors and underwater detectors are a different breed from the average land detector and most ain't cheap.

A detectors job it to detect metal. be it a coin , a pop top ot a pocket knife. its all about reading your signals and understandign what your machine is trying to say. there are some machines that cancel out the smaller objects. my two box (CX+) will not find coins unless there are a lot all amassed together. you are more than likely talking about a discriminator detector. most detectors now allow you to tune out certian trash. be advised, by tuning out that trash you can also miss good targets with a similar conductivity . for example, a pull tab and a low quality gold ring can in some cases have a similar conductivity and, therefore read very similar on your meter. you may think its another piece or aluminium trash but in reality you just passed the down payment to your new car hahahaha. i hope this helps its very late here in new york.

Actually many used GTA ultra 1000 and 500 out there which should handle the coins and gold jewelry in your price range.
As far as water detectors older AT-3 and AT-4 are sometimes found for shallow water detecting in your price range also. Indeed newer water or competent land detectors are out of the range of your pocketbook.
