First time out and I found a Ferrari! :jump:

TN Girl

New member
I was finally able to get out and do some detecting yesterday. Being new, I decided to go to an area lake since I haven't mastered the fine art of plugging yet. My primary goal was to begin learning how to read the Ace 250's signals. I set it in the all metal mode and started swinging. Within a few minutes I got my first beep. I started to dig what I thought was a piece of junk, but when I rinsed the sand off, I realized I'd found a toy Ferrari!

While digging another target (which turned out to be a piece of foil), I uncovered a plastic beach rake. A little girl saw me put it in my bag and asked if she could play with it. I agreed on the condition that she return it (which she did) when she was finished with it. Normally I would have let her have it, but I had to have something to show for my efforts, right?

I went on to find 31 cents (15 of it on the ground by my car - does that count?) and lots of trash. Perhaps the best treasure of the day was another detectorist who gave me some pointers about my swing and showed me how to properly dig a plug.

All in all, I felt my first trip out was a success. I learned some things, had fun, and found some cool stuff. The downside is that my arms and legs are KILLING me today!

Here are some pics of my finds for the day:

Good way to start. Hang in there, it will only get better. Now that you are a Ferrari owner will you still talk to us lowly peones?

WTG! Can I borrow that Ferrari? I promise to return it just like that little girl returned the rake  Nice to see you getting out and enjoying just a great hobby.Kkeep them there finds a coming

TN GIRL, Glad to hear you finally got out to do some hunting with your new machine. Looks like you did good for the first time out. You will have days where all you find is junk and next trip the good coins show up. Detecting will use some muscles that you hardly ever use and you will be sore for a couple days, but when that first old silver coin or indian head penny shows up in your plug you will forget about those sore muscles. good luck and hh............roger

Don't dig plugs in the grass. Rather, cut a C shaped slit in the sod. Fold back the flap and then locate your coin. A Pro-Pointer helps. If it's in the sod remove as much dirt as necessary to find it. Put the dirt in the hole as you remove it. If the coin is in the hole root around until you find it. If you need to remove dirt, give it a squeeze to keep it together and set it close to your hole. When you've found your item replace the dirt and then fold back the flap. Give it a push with your toe and move on. Keeping the grass attached will make sure it stays alive and ensures it won't be sucked up by a lawn mower. With just a little practice you will not leave a trace that you've been there. Have you watched Khouses pinpointing video yet. I recently re-posted it. Watch it to become an expert pinpointer which helps you dig the smallest flap possible.

When the ground is bone dry it takes a lot of skill to keep it looking good and to keep the grass alive.

When you get more adept you can learn to pop coins out a la Uncle Willy.

Looks like my first hunt. It will get much better....with practice.

The method you described is exactly what my new friend showed me yesterday. He made it look easy, but I plan on practicing in my own yard before digging anywhere else. Thankfully, my husband isn't one of those guys who gets all crazy about the lawn.

Coins less than 4 or 5 inches can be found in about 15 seconds using this method. As long as you've pinpointed accurately.

Chris

If you can carry a rag or something the size of frisbee to put the dirt on when you remove it from the hole after finding coin replace dirt and then there is no tell tale sing of you digging, when you get better at pinpointing you will be able to use a tool like a long screw driver and probe the ground and be able to hit the object best to use a brass tip probe as not to damage a good coin or item.

That's a great tip, Fred. I've read about brass-tipped probes, but it still seems like it would still scratch because it's metal. No?
