First time out with the 1280x

Had a hard time because the scoop holes are 5/8 inch - designed so dime and larger size items won't fall through. This one kept getting away - luckily I was in the shallows and could see and reach it.

Here's the ring that kept falling through the holes in the scoop

Sure was pretty coming out of the water but took a loupe to see the fine print that made me even happier.

As you can see this is smaller than a dime

Most items will be large enough that they will not pass through the 5/8" holes. Nails however can be a problem. They can pass through the holes 100 times before you catch it! :rage: I put a large round magnet ( like a speaker magnet) in my scoop and it usually catches nails and iron the first time, about 80% of the time. Just a suggestion. Pretty cheap and it works too!

even though it was the 'quick set' Liquid Nails I lost one magnet in the first 10 minutes of being there. The second fell off as well but found it. Might go to one of those Good Will stores and see if any big speakers can be had cheaply so I can take the magnet out of it.

Used to have a big magnet but in my haste to clean up the basement (we're selling our house) I threw out the magnet and other items I might have been able to scavange the magnets from.

Yeah things unseen that keep going thru the holes drives me nuts. Had one hole almost deep enough to lose my lower leg in before I said forget it. Filled the hole back in and went on my way to the next hit.

The magnet will help solve some of the 'slippery' one - that are iron or steel. Lead fishing weights/split shots just won't stick to the magnets.

I went that route as well. The liquid nails won't cut it. I used some of those plastic wire ties to secure mine to the bottom of the scoop. That seems to be working well. I got the magnet at Northern Tool. It was actually a "Bowl" that attaches to a tool box to hold small parts. I just popped it off the bottom of the bowl with a screwdriver. If you come up for a solution for lead......you let me know! Good hunting!

I hope the holes are small enough so a dime won't fall through. I believe small magnets can be purchased. Last but not least they have adhesives that are used mostly for plumbing and will cure even under water so should do the job. When I water hunted seems like small pieces of foil were a problem which the magnets won't cure.Water hunting is hard work, but thats where the gold jewelry is...good luck in your ventures..J B Weld is name of product...let it cure for 36 hrs and should last as long as scoop.....

Another thought would be to secure the magnet with large SS fender washers and a SS bolt with a nyloc nut.It won't rust, and won't get loose.

besides being cable tied to the back of the scoop it is wedged behind the handle. If it did come loose it has no where to go - it can't get past the handle down inside the scoop.

Good idea you have there Kirk. Thanks for the suggestion.
