First two nickles...thanks

About a week ago I posted a thread asking about tones for nickels, tabs and gold and got input from more folks then I though I would.
Just a couple days ago, here in my community, someone gave me permission to hunt around a couple set of old steps that led to some older houses that use to sit on thier property. I went there today and found a bunch of clad BUT 2 of the coins were my first nickles!!! Nothing old but was good to finally get a feel for the tone and VDI #'s. They were not deep with one coming in at 48,49,50 and the other bounced around between 47 and 51. Both were good repeatable signals and at the same time I started thinking of all the info sent back in response to my post.......so I looked forward to see what was in the dirt.

Thanks to all who responded. The information was put to good use....now I need to batten down the hatches!

Thats awesome Denis. Tone is king over vdi on these machines. Nickles can fool even well seasoned users sometimes...If your using pro mode...pay particular attention to those very light deep tones that may not show a vdi...they are the ones that can really make you do a happy dance. Good luck! ......HH

Yeah! Nice job, and a good post regarding the combined strength of this forum...you ride out the storm, and then go find some GOLD!

Can you expand on this for me please? When you say "deep tones" do you mean that they sound deep or that the target is deep? Most of my fishing is on public land and I hesitate to dig faint tones for fear of being seen next to a big pile of dirt by some busybody. Am I missing the good stuff??

I prefer to hunt in a all metal mode and did any sound. I may not get a ring or coin each time but I do not expect too. I just don"t want to miss anything. The tones are important for they do indicate a logical certain target. However regardless of how faint or loud, it is worth the time.

Sometimes you will hear a very faint tone and possibly no vdi.....that's how the proportinal audio works, close to surface loud but the deeper the coin or target is it loses volume. If it sounds like a sweet tone,,,,dig it!!! Some people say if it's a solid tone in any direction dig it up..But, I've found coins deep that only had a good tone in one direction ( I dug an 1888 Indian head that way) and no vdi showing.

Congratulations on the nickels recoveries. Now you know what the audio and visual signals of those bad boys sound and look like, gold is not too far behind. Keep on swinging, dig 'em all. Happy hunting.
