First West Coast Barber!!!!!!!

AU MARC

New member
Hi All
Just got back from NW. Nevada and got this key date 1896s Barber Dime in great condition 2" down with my EXII!I think this baby`s worth a couple of bucks!I was hunting with Gerry McMullen and he got the same coin on the same day!His was marginally less condition but an amazing day getting 2 of these in 4 hrs both with EXII`s!

Cheers
Marc

F-12 is $250 and VF-20 is $300 - I'd say it's VF-20 because of the clear ''Liberty''. great Find!

Very nice indeed!! I am barber-less so far this year, but if things pan out at this place I have been researching I hope to find my first seated coin. Congratulations on your first barber and I'm sure it won't be your last..........:) HH.

Man that is one fine looking '96-S Barber and would look mighty fine next to my '97-S Barber Half. 2" sounds as if you could have kicked the dirt and found it. Way to go.

Yep It was a no brainer at that depth but this was a ghost town site with an old trail that had not seen activity in over a hundred years.
I was not expecting this coin as we had already dug 1 1896s that day!
1 chineese coin,1 1872 half dime button,1868 indian semi key date, and I got a beautiful buckle to add to an array of other artifacts found.
ALOT OF FUN!

A Big Congratulations! The detail is outstanding on it. I would plan a trip back sometime. If there is 2, there could be others. There had to be a role of these at a local bank at one time to pull that off. I myself found a F/EF 1921-d Mercury dime last year due to a fellow detectorist telling me where he found his and I went out to the site and found one in better shape than his. WTG!

Hi AU MARC,

Very nice finds..Congratulations...how about posting a couple of pics on the other stuff you picked up, re the buckle etc.

All the best....Boony

Here it is MJ-air 23.[attachment 22216 21-dmercurydimefront.png]The front of the coin is in nice shape. [attachment 22217 21-dmercurydimeback.png]The back is in a little bit better shape than shown. The diagnal cross-bands are more visible than shown.

Hi All
Here are the other goodies found that I kept in about 3 1/2 hrs. hunting, most things were shallow and the buttons were found by eye laying on the surface.Gerry found a 1868 IH laying on the surface, half of the coin was exposed,he called me over before he picked it up!!His next coin was the other 1896s dime in solid vg with a grey patina,my 1896s dime came on a trail about 100ft from his truck,I was walking back to call it a day and wham that sounded good I said but more like a clad laying just under the surface, well IT WAS NOT!I screamed another 1896s and a beautiful one at that!!!All I have done is rinsed off the dirt,it is as it was found. We could not believe 2 of these in half a day of hunting and were found about 50 yards apart.!BTW That buckel has Sept.2nd~1858 0n the back.

Hopefully these 2 pictures come out.

I sure would have liked to have found Marc's (because his is a solid VERY FINE+) but when it comes to an 1896-S Barber Dime with only 575,000 minted...I better be lucky that I found one to begin with.

Mine has a dark grey patena on it and I'll leave it as is for now.

Very nice looking Barber. If you are careful, you could try electolysis on the coin. Just don't leave it in too long, just long enough to lift the gray off of it. Good Luck and WTG! HH.

Hi Marc,

You are very lucky to be able to hunt some really old sites, old west ghost towns etc, it looks like you found an old suspender clip might be from one of the old saloon dollies, if it could talk, might tell some great stories.

Great finds......Regards....Boony

Thanks for the compliments Everyone,Our finds were great but what was even better was the great company an the chance to detect an area that even the trained eye would not know it was even there.Very few detectors have swung over this ground, there was no modern trash of any kind so all targets are a piece of history one way or the other!
Spots like this are hard to come by and the experiance equalled the finds!
Many Thanks to you Gerry and love those pics you posted!!I did`nt have much luck this time for nuggets but I`m not complaining!I did see a few beauties unearthed!!!!I am very fortunate to get out west each year and accompany Gerry when he goes to NW.Nevada to train folks how to use the big P.I. gold detectors,I`ve seen their finds dramatically go up after their training with Gerry and the nuggets start ending up in their pockets!!!This trip taking a break from gold detecting and doing some relic hunting for half a day more than made up for my lack of gold this time!
I`m bringing my Explorer every trip now!
