Fisher 1280 Questions

khouse, may I ask why you would even consider the 1280, when the CZ21 is clearly designed for that specific purpose? It clearly is a better salt water choice. Mine should arrive next week and I'll hopefully have a favorable report. Best of luck in your decision sir.

Gulf Hunter,
I only get to a salt beach maybe once in 4 years for maybe a week. I know there are better detectors out there but the price is too high for my limited use. So I was just looking for for a lessor priced machine to fit my hunting needs. I know it can't be as good as the 20 or 21. The last time I went to the Bahama's I took my former CZ5. It worked perfect wading in the water. I found 2 silver rings with it. But some of the waves put the control box in jeopardy. I just wanted to go out deeper but couldn't. I may buy an old CZ model and put it in a waterproof box? It won't be until this summer but I thought I would start asking questions.

khouse, if your primary hunting will be fresh water, then I feel like the 1280 will serve you well. I did not know that you would primarily be hunting fresh or I would not have even mentioned it. There are hunters using the 1280 in salt, with surprising results, but I wonder if they would do better using the CZ20/21? I still would encourage you to buy new if you can though, as the warranty will pay dividends. Things break out there and warranty will cover many of those things for you. Best of luck in your decision sir.

I was talking about detecting the salt beaches. Were trying to plan for a trip to Florida this summer and I wanted to go out past my knees. I already built an underwater Ace 250 detector for fresh water and it works fine. That's why I thought I would maybe waterproof a CZ model. But I have seen 1280's go for $375 or less. But there wasn't much on the net about it.

1280X work find in salt water and no it doesn't have auto track,10 inch coil is better than the 8 inch. Works very good in fresh water too.
Have you had good luck with it in salt water? Does this detector have auto track?
It has a factory set GB, I just found out there is an internal pot that can be adjusted by a dealer/ Fisher service. Check out the info on this thread,
Thanks for the info!
No sweat, just to update you I called Fisher about this GB internal pot thingamajig, spoke to a tech guy. Told him all the setting numbers of the disc and sens when I use it in the saltwater, wet sand, dry sand, as well as the settings I use on dirt in my area.

Without getting into the actual settings and techno jargon, I need to send the machine in for a calibration and they need to balance the coil and adjust the internal GB pot. He said something is "off" I should be able to crank up the sens more than I can. They of course have their own procedures for doing all these things but he said the more info I give them on the settings I've been using the better. I am stoked and I am covered too, lifetime warranty.

I want to thank fellow forum member VLAD who read one of my posts and told me about the internal GB POT thing, which prompted me to call Fisher.

THANKS VLAD!!

Glenn

The machine is not a VLF or PI machine. It's a VF-Search (quartz crystal controlled) and runs at 2.4 KHZ.

This is the same working frequency as the DetectorPro Headhunter Diver model.

Thanks and HH!!!
Glenn,
That's good to know about the GB adjustment. I thought the 1280 had just a 5 year warranty?
I bought the machine in 2002 but just started using it in Nov. '07 (better late than never huh?)so I got a lifetime warranty.

Not sure if I explained it right, it is an auto GB machine, just turn it on and go, there is no GB switch. However it can't GB in a range from like 0-infinity SO they have an adjustable pot (potentiometer) inside and it has a factory set range of say 10-30. If your ground mineralization goes above the limit you get chatter and you have to turn down the sens to compensate. This pot can be adjusted but it's best to know your settings and tell them, and it can only be done at the factory to remain under warranty. The tech told me on the phone I could do it myself if I wanted to. Hope that doesn't confuse you anymore.

Look around khouse, you might could find a CZ20 for that much or a little more, depending upon condition. It would be a better all around choice. Best of luck mate!
