Fisher F4 All Metal Mode

Ok, I've had my Fisher F4 for nearly 3 years now, I've found a lot of cool things! 42 Indian Head Pennies, 20 Silver Dimes, 4 Silver Quarters, Buffalo Nickels, V Nickels and lots of Civil War stuff. I always hunt with the bottom (iron) notched out, I always ground balance, sometimes a couple times during one hunt, I KNOW! I've heard it doesn't work in Disc Mode, but it only takes a second to do, and I feel like it helps, whether or not it does? My Question? I have tried ALL METAL MODE a couple of times for a few minutes, just seems like pinpoint to me, only hear the same tone. Is this correct, or am I not doing something wrong? I usually hunt old places and there seems to be lots of Iron or iron in the dirt, nails etc. with the bottom two notched out, it is pretty quiet usually. No problem finding nickels etc. Was just asking because maybe I could get more depth in all metal. Is there VDI numbers in all metal? I guess I need to try it sometime. Looking for others with F4's who use all metal. Thanks

Correct, all metal and pinpoint are the same thing except in pinpoint you get depth numbers and in all metal you get VDI numbers but still, you are utilizing the threshold tone either way.
You listen for changes in that tone in all metal, just a slight saver could mean something deep, on shallow targets it is more pronounced.
On some units this is the deepest way to hunt and many do it that way all the time.

On many detectors there are adjustments to fine tune that threshold tone, get it just right and the depth can be scary and unmasking abilities can get better.

One definition of threshold...
"A level, point, or value above which something is true or will take place and below which it is not or will not".

On my F70 I can adjust the threshold from -9 to +9.
The threshold is exactly what it is defined to be, in our hobby it sets a bar and targets below that threshold barrier will be blocked out, those that come in above that bar come in.
In our case it relates to being able to sense smaller objects and the depth also comes into play.

A threshold tone can be your friend if you learn to get used to it, understand it and utilize it to your advantage.

Thanks REVIER, I don't think I can adjust my threshold. Do you use all metal very often?

No, you can't adjust yours but at least you have one.
I used the heck out of an F2 for 3 years but no all metal threshold on that one unless you keep your finger pressed on he pinpoint button...which I never did.
Now with the F70 I use both disc and all metal.
Only disc at first, that constant threshold tone in my phones can drive you crazy if you let it get to you, but I used all metal to check targets I found in disc and quite by accident one day I found it actually worked better, was more stable and gave me better info in a site with a screaming amount of EMI.
After that I switched into it more and more at most of my sites and kept increasing the time spent using it.
Now it's been a couple of years and I can use it every day, all day, and it is a natural way for me to hunt.

I found all metal works better in a couple of different situations.
That heavy EMI thing, in extreme iron I figured out a way to use it and be very successful, and it got scary depth in good Kansas soil that I used to hunt in but now I am in the southeast and it penetrates pretty good in this mineralized, iron infested devil dirt, also.
I still use it to check targets I find in disc a lot, too.
I still use disc but I also use all metal and I like switching back and forth or at least the option is nice to have...it is just good to learn how to use all features of your tools in case one works better than another in certain situations.
More arrows in the quiver, as it were.

Try all metal some, slow at first, take as much time as you need to get used to it but give it a good try and see if you can learn to deal with it.
Listen to the tone and notice if it changes, if it does look at the screen.
The numbers might be accurate on some deeper ones, they might be off on deep stuff too and if that F4 is anything like the upper end Fishers you might get an audio signal but the screen might go blank...that will happen on really deep stuff if it does.
It might help you find you even more, maybe some targets that are masked that disc might not handle as well and maybe some deeper than you are used to digging to now.
Or, you may hate doing it this way.
Not much to lose if you try so give it a shot.

Thanks for your advice REVIER, I'll give it another try, now that I kinda understand what to expect. Never hurts to try to teach an old dilapidated dog a new trick!
