Fisher F5 best settings

Krychu

New member
Hi,

what settings do you use for everyday for F5? Mine is (for coins):

- for trash areas:

- Gain at 99
- Thresh at -3 (in places of small noise: -2)
- Discrim at 0
- Notch - Iron, Foil and Pulltab
- Freq. - 1
- Tones - d3

- for fields (not too rich by trash):

- Gain at 99
- Thresh at -3/-2
- Discirm at 12
- Notch - -
- Freq. - 1
- Tones - d4

- for beach

- Gain at 60
- Thresh at 2/3 or more
- Discrim 0
- Notch - Foil and Tab
- Freq. - 1
- Tones - d2

What do you recommend the best settings?

I also noticed that when using a single tone, ID as if has improved on the edge of their range, as when using the multi tone discrimination on the edge of their range, some signals of high conductivity and high-pitched tone in the ground falling to a low tone. Request? The more tones, the less digging and finding :detecting:

Sorry for my bad English :)

I am no expert with the F5 and most of my hunting spots are sports fields and trashy parks-fairgrounds. My ground phase is usually 65 to 75 and I have two bars black on the Fe meter. With that said, I hunt with disc at 10, nothing notched, gain at 70, threshold 0 or plus 1, three tones, and default frequency. I have noticed that the detector chirps away when I run the threshold in the positive range when I set it down to dig, but as soon as I start sweeping the coil, the chirps all but stop. It is a very busy sounding detector with this setup, but I have quickly been able to get use to picking out the high tones sandwiched between the trash. I have found many nickels in the short time I have used the F5 and they usually have a very steady vdi number of 28 to 30. I think this detector reminds me of a "better mannered Fisher Coinstrike. I have owned several Coinstrikes over the years and have done well with them. If my memory serves me, I think the chief engineer of the F5 also had a big hand in designing the Coinstrike. Just a couple of thoughts. R.L.

I set my F5 about the same. I have found many nickles/gold/and silver items. It will detect a nickle down to 6" in this Virginia clay dirt at these settings, but remember what works on my F5 may not be correct on yours.

This morning I was running 70 gain, -2 thres, 19 disc 2 tone. I keep hearing a lot about people running gain maxed out. Might have to try this. Just to see what it does if nothing else. My soil doesnt show any bars on the fe meter, however I cant seem to take the thres to 0 unless I drop my gain down to 45, and at that stage, its fairly pointless, as I only get an inch at best depth for whatever reason.

I think it is cool that you can run your Gain at 99. How many bars do you have showing on your FE304 graph?

Ok so I tried gain at 99 this morning, thres -3, disc 15. Got nothing but chatter, fe meter was blank and gb was at 15 to 35. I had to take thres to -6 before it finally went quiet at stand still, however in motion still a ton of noise. So I dont know how you did it. :)

Hi there Mez !

Reading your post suggests something is possibly wrong with your detector.....assuming you don't live on a dry sandy, mineral free beach !!!!...

NO FE bars registering ??????......Generally you should have one or two showing black.....(Very Low...or.... Low)

Can you do a repeat of the 'ground pumping' routine, IN ALL METAL mode, just to reassure us of the present FE bar showings?

Also, note the F5's settings, and then do an 'In air' check for a specific coin, and then repeat test with coin at a depth of say 5 inches.

Please tell us where you are located, so the USA readers can comment with their opinions on typical soil GB bar levels......Tex.

God I hope there's nothing wrong with it. I've already gotten a replacement one from Fisher, the first one the thres knob wasnt changing the settings properally. Don't want to have to go through that again... I have seen the FE bar register in the past, but most areas Im hunting it shows nothing at all. I'm going out tomorrow morning and will do a gb in am and see if it shows anything on the bar. As to where I live, I'm in Hillsboro Oregon, west coast about 24 miles from Portland.

Ok, so went out this morning to a park that had recently shown nothing on the FE meter. While doing gb in am, fe meter spiked to 3-4, as soon as I stopped gb it went back to nothing. Number on the gb while in phase lock was 75, number out of phase lock and swinging was 15. 58 cents found this morning. that brings my week total to just shy of 2 bucks.. Wish I could get that in a single day, then I might feel like the fisher was actually doing better than the bounty hunter tracker 2 was... lol.

I run my disc at zero, The F5 hits harder on the low conductors such as nickels / small chains. but if i run any disc even 1, the Low conductors in my test Garden are silent to the F5 ??

Thanks for the tips everyone. I have had my F5 for some time now and still trying to figure out the best settings. My friends tell me it is too complicated to use, but I am determined because I hear so many good things about it. My finds have increased considerably lately and I know because I am finally learning how to use it. Major learning curve, but in the long term I suspect I will know I made the right choice.

:)I hear this question ask a lot about different detectors on forums all the time. The question is ( What is the best setting for my detector ???) The real answer to this question is the specific ground condition in your area at the time of your hunt will determine the best setting for your detector. The general rule of thumb is to set the level of discrimination or all metal mode based on how you want to hunt, then set the sensitivity as high as you can while still maintaining detector stability along with a good stable ground balance and your good to go with a VLF detector. If there is a lot of trash, iron or hot rocks and it's reaping havoc on the detector back the sensitivity down a little and re ground balance, repeat as needed to get stability. This information will allow you to get the best or proper settings for your detector based on the type of ground your hunting in at the time.

So the best setting for one area may be different in another and different even a little between two of the same kind detectors in the same area being hunted.:)

** The amount of tones to use on your detector would be a personal choice some like single and other prefer multi tones when hunting.:)

** The amount of disc or discrimination is your choice, no one perfect setting it depends on how you want to hunt (the range of targets you want or do not want to find) again a personal choice.:)

Hi everyone!

Sorry for the huge delay.

Mike - I run this detector in Gain at 99. But in the Threshold at -2 or -3. Is never so that the maximum sensitivity can manage to work on the threshold at +. But when I search I discovered settings - reduced sensitivity, and increased the threshold detector - "picks up" signals better somehow. But why this is - I do not know. Graphs Fe3O4 jump when tuning into the ground and when I "catch" a signal. Rarely change during the normal search.

Krychu, are you still using these settings ? and if you are have you found anything of interest ?

Hi vipersspit. Now I have another detector. The F5 is now the "back-up" detector :) But when I search with the F5, much of the beaches, I found's much of coins, buckles, rings, etc. Whatever I find, I would recommend this detector for beginners - it's really cool. :)

Sorry for my bad English.

Greetings!
