hi, i'm pretty new to metal detecting, my parents bought me a bounty hunter discovery 2200 a few years ago when i first showed interest. i didn't use it that much until recently. now i'm a member of a club and i would like to have something a little better and respectable. so my question to you crusher and anyone else is, is the f5 a solid buy for the price? no one in the club seems to know enough about the f series and don't want to give me bad advice. they know my budget is about $500 and think i would be best off with a garrett ace 250. i've done quite a bit of reading and watching of reviews and video's and the f5 seems like a great machine. just hoping that i could input from someone who has owned several machines especially fishers. thanks in advance

Noodlewolf, I've had a F5 for going on two years and think it's an excellent machine.

Here's a suggestion: Do an author search for the member "Mike Hillis" He is the F5 guru on this forum, and has posted a wealth of valuable info on the F5 here. Go back about a year or so and he was posting pretty heavily about the F5 then.

By pulling up those threads, you'll also be able to get a lot of other people's posts on the F5 too.

You'll find a lot to read and learn about the F5.

Welcome to the hobby, good luck and have fun!

Let me start off by saying Fisher Garrett minelab and other top brands are all good machines $300-500 range. Some are a little easier to use then others. that's not to say they are not good.
If you live near a salt water beach you'll want something that will ground balance for salt water beaches. If you are going to hunt parks, school yards, and fresh water lakes then the fisher f4 or Garrett ace250 is a good choice.
It really depends on what you want to do. I have used Fisher detectors for over 30 years and Garrett. I am using the Fisher f5 now and have no problem using on salt water beaches (that only comes from experience).
You must practice and listen to the different sounds your detector is telling you, in time 3-4 weeks you'll be able to tell a bottle cap, foil, dime, quarter and other coins from junk, but you will always dig junk stuff nothing is perfect.
I still use my Garrett PI detector for the salt water beaches (all metal mode) the fisher F5 is great on the beach also in dis mode, set to eliminate iron foil only. Stay in the $400-500 dollar range and you will be happy
