I took my girlfriend out with me metal detecting in the gold country of Northern California. She used the F5 with the 5" coil and I used the gold bug 2.
I didn't know how the F5 would do with gold.. Well we both got skunked but found a bunch of junk around a touristy Gold Mining Historical Park.
I'm concerned if the 5" coil was working the way it should. It seemed that you had to swing it very slow for it to pick up any item. It also seemed that the ID was off and very jumpy. I tossed a few coins and pull tabs on the ground and they didn't seem like they would ring out or id like they do with the Standard Coil.
Not sure if this had to do with the ground mineralization but I think it was ok as the ground phase stayed around the 60 ish level.. when she went near the wet dirt and sand near the river it seemed to throw a bit of the fit.. but I imagine it just needed to be re groundbalanced for the wet soil..
It could have just been her in-experience(first time out for her) but I am just a week or two into this as well and the F5 has been pretty much a cinch..
Any body have any tips or tricks or things to check to see if the coil is working properly.. or is that just how smaller coils are.???.
Also.. what are the purpose of a smaller coil.. Is it only so your signal is more focussed and not so wide so you don't pick up extra items in trashy areas ??
