Fisher ID Excel comments

I have been detecting about 3 years and have used many different machines. Some top of the line units Like the Explorer, Whites XLT, XL Pro. Tesoro Cortez, Deleon and a few other ID machines.
I recently aquired an ID Excel and have gotten out to use it a few times. What a sweet machine... very impresive mid priced machine.
For anybody looking for a good versitale easy to operate detector you can't go wrong. its so simple to use... but works as well as alot of top of the line machines. You can't go wrong. I would highly recamend it to Newbies or people frustrated with thier top of the line complictated detector. You will be amazed at the performance of this little machine.
Needless to say... I love it... and am adding it to my arsenel.

Hi Reaney,
What's your impression of the ID Excel as far as stability of operation in different environments?
The Deleon I tried was subject to a lot of RF and it signaled "raise coil" way to often to suit me. No fun at all!
I have been holding off trying the Excel due to the lack of coil choices. Why Fisher has not made smaller coils for the Excel or Coinstrike puzzles me.
Thanks, Tom

Just don't have enough room in a small coil for the internals or perhaps its much better in trash so they feel a small coil would not be a good seller..
I know Garrett could not fit the GTI components in a small coil also.

Appreciate the info! Gonna have to try one out this fall. I have been spending most of my time water hunting lately with the 1270 but looking forward to hitting land sites again now that fall is approaching.
Bill, I talked to a Fisher tech a while back about the preset GB on the 1270 and learned some interesting info. Found out that mine is way to negative on land here. They adjust the trimmer to ferrite in all metal mode with the GB set around 3. That makes the normal disc mode negative in my mild ground. To check put it in normal disc with the knob turned down to minimum rejection and see if you get a response to the ground, you may have to turn the sensitivity up a bit to hear the response. Odd that in iron disc at minimum you can't hear the ground only in normal mode, at least on mine.
I didn't go to crazy on the trimmer, just enough that the negative response went close to neutral. On my test coins I can turn the disc up a lot higher now before I lose them.

I checked out my 1270 like you suggested, in min discrimination it

Bill,
Sounds like your acts just about like mine after the adjustment. Had to turn it a little clockwise and it balances out right about 3 in all metal now. Seems like they have a little hotter ground in mind when setting em up at the factory than I have here.
Glad I checked it out. <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">

I find it to be very stable and the trash seperation is very good... if you move real slow in a trashy inviroment.
Try it... You'll like it.

I also had a Deleon before the Excel and it went crazy in blk sand but I know what you mean about the "lift coil" display. The Excel has problems with blk sand also but as bad as the Deleon.

Reaney,
Thanks for the reply. On the C$ I have to increase the sensitivity to maintain depth when using a slower CZ style sweep speed. How forgiving is the Excel in that regard?
Based on what I have read so far, it seems that the Excel and the C$ are two totally different animals.
One last question. Have you used the Excel at older sites where iron masking and falsing is a problem with other machines and if so how did it do?
Thanks, Tom

HI Tom' I emailed this response and it was returned to me as SPAM... Not sure why.

I don't use the CZ's... so I can't really tell you. So far... the deepest targets I have gotten are about 7inches. I turn up sens as hot as I can and still be stable. I also ground balance with the coil closer to the ground. I've heard its better that way.I've only got a few days in with the Excel... I'm far from an expert on it.

Actually... they are simuler... Just the Coinstrike is loaded with options and more complictated. But it sounds like the Electronics are the same. But,I'm still investigating this. I have decided to try one if I can get a deal on one.
One last question. Have you used the Excel at older sites where iron masking and falsing is a problem with other machines and if so how did it do?
No... I havn't. I have not had time to head out to some cellar pits. I did use it in a farm field relic hunting and it worked great.
I've used it in trashy parks and the target seperation is very good. When I get a chance to try it in an Iron infested site I will post my opinion on the results.
I hope this answers your questions.
