Is it agood detector for someone just starting out? No experience what-so-ever. What do you guys think? My buddy knows where the money is but... he won't tell me! He wants to go buy his own instead of getting a third party involved. D@mn it! He needs advice, I told him Tesoro Tejon and Fisher ID Excel would be good ones IMO. His price limit is 300-400$, found a used Tejon for 425$, and ID Excel for 399$

Looking for a good back-up to my XLT, I recently purchased an ID Excel and used it for the first time last weekend. I was amazed with the power of this moderately priced little detector. When I read the instruction book and saw how simple it is to operate I must admit I really didn't expect much as far as depth, stability, and accuracy. I was wrong. The Excel really packs a punch.
I think the Excel would be an outstanding choice for a first machine. Many first time buyers get too simple or too complex a machine for their first detector, and quickly get discouraged. Discouragement will not happen with the Excel. The Excel is a very simple machine to operate, yet it delivers a lot of power. You won't spend your time fiddling with adjustments with the Excel, you will spend your time detecting. No complex programs to understand and books to read, just get out there and go. Best of all, you won't feel like you missed good stuff because your machine was not up to the task. If it's there, you will find it with the Excel. I am very impressed with the Excel.

Thanks for the reply John. This unit is definately one of the ones we are looking at. Glad it works great for you. Where did you get yours at?

I purchased mine "Used Trade-in, Never used." from an online dealer. He said a customer bought it and never took it out of the box. I really didn't know what to expect, but when it arrived it was exactly as described. Brand new and never used! I saved about a hundred bucks.
Like I said, I am really impressed with the simplicity of operation of this detector. I was hunting with a guy with a ML Explorer 2, and we were finding targest at about the same rate and depth. I was really impressed, and so was he.

Ouch! I got an Explorer II, could saved a small fortune if I had got a ID huh? <img src="/metal/html/cry.gif" border=0 width=40 height=15 alt=":cry"> I love my Exp, and wouldn't trade for anything though! <img src="/metal/html/tongue.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":b">
A friend of mine is just getting into the hobby, and I was going help him out the best I could, with the budget he has allocated. I suggested a good used Id Excel or a Tejon. I liked what I read on the Fisher and would like to have one myself someday. Thanks for your insight, and reply..... I'll pass it on.

Took the little ID Excel out this morning for the second time.
I hunted a playground which we have hunted many many tmes. I have hunted it with Explorer, Sovereign, Cortes, and Lobo ST. The little ID Excel found: 5 quarters, 6 dimes, 2 nickles, 6 pennies, a little brass charm, a cheap ring with a large stone, and a very large silver heart pendant. I am amazed. This machine is just fun to use. No fiddling with stuff, just turn on and detect.

This is an hours worth on a heavily hunted playground.

My buddy Ray ordered one from Kellyco and should have received it today. Of course it was storming here today and I'm sure it's killing him. <img src="/metal/html/lol.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":lol">

I think he is going to like it.

GREAT JOB! Real nice finds for an hour's hunting time. I was out waterhunting with my Excal for 2hrs. yesterday, and got a total of 36cents (quarter, dime, pennie) and junk. Got a good workout,
rough surf/currents. But, waterhunting is a whole different animal. HH, NamVetLesTreasureSeeker
