Fisher.. Speed and Swing modifications..

Something these F series really have going for them, in the right conditions, the light weight allows a person to really extend the swing, and the rapid response seems to operate very well with some speed.
On the wide open outfields, beaches, or any clear target poor environment, I have a swing that goes like this...As you begin your swing in normal fashion, relax your grip and allow your hand to slowly slide down off the rubber and ease its way down towards the battery box. After about three or four swings, your hand should be right in front of the battery box, your arm straight, and barely hanging on with just your thumb, middle, and ring finger. The momentum will keep everything going until you are at a comfortable and steady swing. It will SEEM fast, dont worry. As the detector comes around to the left side, gently slow and reverse the swing by catching it with the left forefinger, just by letting it bump into the rubber grip where your swinging hand usually is, let it decellerate and give it a little assist to get it moving back to the right. Its weird at first, but once you get used to it, you can really cover some sod in a hurry. you are now cutting at least a 10' wide swath, and the arc is well over 200 degrees. The trick is to not grip it too hard or you will fatigue, just very gentle and consistent movement, let the centrifigul force take over and do the work, you are just guiding it. Heck, these things are so light you can gently grip them with just a few fingers in a normal swing. You will get good at "feathering" the leading edge of the coil, so its just a little higher than the following edge, and develop a steady and consistent coil height off the ground, throughout the entire arc, and a comfortable pace to cover massive amounts of ground in clear and target poor environments. I think you can run a hotter sens than normal too, it just gotta be a target poor area,
I dont know if this is possible with other heavier, unbalanced or slower detectors, probably not, so maybe this advantage will help us give a decent showing here on the Findmall.
oh, I just got back from a few passes in an outfield, doing exactly this, 1 JFK half, 3Qs, 3 d's, 3 n's, and 8 p's all over 4" in some sandy deep sod and loam running 90 sens.

That's for sure you don't need a strong grip to swing an F series. My F2 hits better on targets with a medium fast swing, even when analyzing a target the sweeps have to be on the quick side.
I like to imagine I'm painting the ground as I go and if you detect in the morning with dew on the ground you can see the ground you have covered or missed.

Dew is an excellent indicator of your swings especially with my F5's small 5" coil that I use most these days. It is easy to be either too slow or too fast walker with that small a coil so it is easy to calibrate your speed according to what you see in the dew :)

I like to extend the rod to its maximum to cover as much area with one sweep as possible. My swing goes all the way from 9 o'clock to 3 o'clock with the long rod so it covers lots of ground on one swing. And I agree that a light grip is the key to this wide arc. Also the lightness of the unit makes this possible and the small sniper coil enhances this even further. I have been critisized of using too long rod and thus going too fast on the swing but my results of almost 1000 euros (about 1400 USD) of coins this season alone is proof that F5 can take all that speed I am giving it.

Hey Dude and Patti, thanks for the replys! Glad to hear this is working for you...Do you know if there are aftermarket long lower rods available? It would be nice to have something 2' longer than the stock rod. It would even be cooler to have a cam lock on the shaft, so a person could adjust length really quick, even better would be to have a push button quick release with a spring or gas assist like those cylinders that hold open a car hood that would extend the rod smoothly, and allow a person to quickly retract it by just pushing the coil on the ground to click it up short again. I swing the 11" dd coil, and have also been admonished by others for going too fast, but hey it works for me, and I think I've learned to slow down and choke up when I need to. Wide swinging really pays off when you hit targets at the edge of the arc that would have been missed, and can quickly find the lanes of targets in a large area. Seems that the Primo obvious locations have been hit by others, and it becomes evident pretty quickly whether they have or not, the periphery areas that hold no distinguishing "good spot" features are untouched, and theres lots of loot laying there if you can get on it quickly. Lots of times when I hit targets, I dont stop to dig them right away, but pull a tight circle of the area to see what else might be there, or if theres a pattern or reason for the drop zone, or if it was just random. .
Yes, cutting a big swath will increase finds dramatically, in essence covering twice the ground in half the time.

Dew on the grass; Ah I remember that from colorado. But the humor; we got no dew ; heck we got very little grass :) Have to just drag your bad leg in the sand :) Souther AZ.

Nice post on speed and swing. All detectors are not created equal and dont swing the same.
