Fixing the MX5 "Tones" Problem

New member
I sent my MX5 into Whites for the tones fix. When it was returned the test order they included in the box listed a number of items they checked indicated that they had all passed. The test order also indicated that they adjust "R67". I presume that this was the circuit they had to adjust to fix the tones issues - but I'm not sure. Is anyone out there familiar with the R67 adjustment and what it's intended to do?

(White's Engineering manager at the time) was to remove a resistor that they had added after a prototype had been checked out. They had felt that a resistor in one location might help serve some purpose, but that was the cause for the Tone ID glitch. Don't know which resistor number, but Carl said the 'fix' was to remove a resistor and check the unit out.

I know I waited until after they had a lot of fixing done and I drove down to White's and had them take care of mine, which was from the first release. It's been working perfectly!

What exactly was the Tones Issue, what should a new buyer look out for when testing the MX5 for the tones issue.

Thanks for your replies.

shift in the audio tone as if it shifted up an octave while using Tone ID. It often occurred within the first several minutes of hunting, but I did have a time or two that I didn't get the shiht for maybe twenty minutes of use. I just powered the MX5 Off, then turned it back on and hunted away. Then, once they had the source of the glitch isolated and taken care of in production units and many first release MX5's, I drove on down and had them fix mine. Only took a few minutes and it's functioned perfectly ever since.

Odds are you won't come across an early release that hasn't been taken care of.

The MX5 was designed to use stereo audio for mixed mode in a higher-end model (which was canceled), so in the MX5 we connected the audio channels together. This caused a glitch in the micro that wasn't noticed in testing, so the easy solution was to remove R67.

While my MX5 is working almost flawlessly for most hunting applications, I do wish it had a 'Lock' function to stop the Auto-Trac® .... is there any way to have such a modification added?

Also, how are things going in your new location? I trust all is well, and that means 'interesting' in the detector design world.

PS: I'll be headed to Utah around Thanksgiving but the weather doesn't look promising for me to get out to the 'bottle cap site'. In my move to Eastern Oregon last September my specimen got broken so the only one I know of around is the one I gave you. I trust it is safely in the plastic container. I'll probably have to go try and find another, or several, when spring and summer arrive on my next trip that way.

Hi Monte,

Adding a track lock feature would require software changes, and without divulging the whys and wherefores, it's probably not gonna happen. As for me, "things" are going quite well and, yes, interesting. I'm hoping I still have your BC and didn't leave it behind; I'm still trying to get my lab set back up and haven't yet unpacked everything. I'll keep an eye out for it.

Regards,
Carl

Received my MX5 in the middle of May. To date I have had no problems with tone shift, or any other problems for that matter. Unit is running wonderful. Anyone send their units in just to be checked and if so how long after purchase?

Hi Matt, if your MX5 is working as it should do, then I would not send it in, it will have already had resistor R67 removed

No good fixing it if it ain't broke, I thought I had a problem with my MX5, turned out that I was getting real bad EMi from some

newly erected phone masts, moved away from them and all was ok, you got to love the MX5, great machine.

Good Luck and H H.

Hi Leslie, had that happen today with the EMI. I was between a school and a busy roadway. Started cutting up with tones and vdi going off. Was using the stock coil again. Bumped the sensitivity down to 6 and it straighten out. Kind of caught me off guard for the first few minutes when it started because I rarely have any problem with EMI.

Yes Matt, no way can I run sensitivity any higher than 8 bars using the stock coil, but I prefer the SEF 8x6 it's a killer on the MX5.
