Floppy search coil-sorry should have read preceeding post

New member
I have an Excalibur 1000 and I am not able to tighten down the search coil. The wing nut only turns so tight then it jumps like it is stripped. I saw someone else post that the had the same problem, but no one responded as to what to do to correct it. This guy replaced the wing nut and bolt, but it still did not fix the problem. Thanks for any help.

Hi Kirk......

I have had a couple "floppys".
My BBS 800 did not want to stay in place without putting some severe tightening on the bolt. Cut a couple cardboard "teardrop washers" out of a cigarette carton and placed one under each rubber teardrop to tighten up the fit. Then roughed up the inside of the coil "ears" with some emery cloth so it would not be too slick. Stays in place easily now.
You could probably cut some washers out of a plastic coffee can lid....waterproof.

Other floppy was a 14" Detech. Just too big and heavy to stay in place. Rigged a piece of thin cord from the front of the coil to the top side of shaft locking ring. That held it in place.

Fixed mine today, Bought a new 3/8 nylon nut and bolt, drilled out the hole in the coil and lower leg to take the bigger bolt and put in only one rubber fender washer from True Value hardware between the teardrop washer and the area where the shaft slides down into the coil houseing. Tighten the bolt and was in the surf tonite with it and it didnt move a bit

I think I will work on the washers first. If that does not work then I will look at replacing the bolt with a larger one like you did. Just a little nervous about drilling out a larger hole.

Just put the coil on the lower leg and use 5/16 or 3/8 and drill out the larger holes, ive had to do it on all 4 of my Tesoros also.
try the 5/16 first, then if not happy go one size larger, also the rubber fender washer with the 1/4 inch hole may do it, it was so tight i could only get one in, also while trying to tighten the nylon bolt that came with the minelab, the wingnut split on one side, thats when i decided to make it larger with a new nut and bolt. can also find nylon stuff at hobby shops, used for rc boats, planes etc.

no drilling required .......you must have some type of semi plyable rubber material lying in the garage ....I just cut two thin rubber pieces and slid them in. I did have to punch a hole in em so the bolt could pass through..seemed easy enough .....no need to drill it out.......I would say this is a common thing that does happen .......I have had one that was so damn tight I had a bear of a time getting it on ...I liked the flopper better because I can shim it ......the tight one is a pesty pain in the kiester ..........good luck .........if you need some shim material just pm me ........I got plenty ....

I wonder if one of the thing is happening is the rubber teardrop washers are wore out and the nylon wing nut was tighten too much cause it to strip the treads of the bolt trying to get it to tighten down. I would replace the nylon nut and bolt plus a new set of the rubber teardrop washers which most all the Minelab dealer should have in stock.
If you cant find any give me a PM and I think I have a few sets here.

By the way, by your description, your bolt probably is stripped by now, you may even have a dickens of a time getting it off. That was my experience once they started slipping, I had to replace them. The trick is to use one of these tips posted here to keep from overtightening it in the first place.

Worked on my coil today. Took it off and pulled the washers out, put them in backwards. Finished it off by adding a neoprene washer between the wing nut and the shaft. Seems to work. Heading to the beach tomorrow to try it out.
