Flying with the 705?

Here's the scoop! In the first part of 2011, I'll be heading for Nags Head, NC and the beach for a week. Think we're flying Delta. Anyway, how best should I carry it? I'm thinking...disassemble it and put the (computer) head and coil(s) in my carry-on while packing the shaft parts within my checked luggage. OR...get a hard-sided case and check it. The other option would be to UPS it to and from that area. Lookin' for guidance from those experienced with travel with a detector. Naturally, insurance is a MUST!

Thanks, guys!!

Hi Sherry.
I've only flown a few time with my detectors. Only local flights here in Australia on small 38 seater aircraft. I always break down my detectors and put them in my ruck sack and put it in the luggage. Even though the back pack is a soft bag, I just make sure that I keep the control box closer to the center of the bag. that way there is lots of 'padding' around it and it won't get damaged.

Hey, Mick! Thanks for your response! That's what I was thinkin' except I'm hopin I can keep the box in my backpack. Baggage attendants tend to abuse most everything that goes into the cargo area. I may do well to call the airlines and ask. Perhaps some US guys will eventually reply. I know some of them travel with theirs, too.

I have traveled several times and even the Philippines with my detector. I take apart and I carry the control box part in my carry-on and place the rest in baggage.

Sherry,
I bought a hard case from Kellyco and cut the included foam to hold the broken down X-70 and 3 coils. I put the locks that TSA can open on it and checked it as baggage. I flew from New Orleans to LAX to Melbourne, Au and back with it last year. I had no problems. I put sticky labels on all parts and inside and outside of the case with Metal Detector X-70, Name, Addr and Cell # just in case there was a question. I also insured it. I had one TSA agent say "I'll bet this thing detects metal doesn't it?" Only spent part of 2 days near Ballerat, Victoria, Au and only found old axe head, pocket knife, tin cans, 22 slugs , bird shot and shell casings no nuggets. I found later that I was looking where there were only prospects, no mines. If I had researched before going I may have found out that a few hundred yards west of where I was hunting there were several mines and placer found in streams. Good luck at Nags Head, haven't been there since hang gliding at Kill Devil Hill in 1981.

Very cool, guys! I appreciate your input for sure! I have plenty of time to do this since the trip isn't for several months but I want to be prepared in advance. Besides, I MAY take it to CO when I go the first week in December because that's where I lost the gold earring that got me into the sport to start with! I stupidly wore earrings while geocaching near my friend's home! Anyway, the jeweler paid me $27.50 for the remaining one. Why not go after the other?! :detecting:

Dave, I can't believe the TSA agent's question!! DUH!

Thanks, guys!

I think the TSA guy was just razzing me. Good luck finding the other earring.

Hi, being paranoid and neurotic, I won't pack my metal detector in luggage that is going to be checked. I always break the detector down and put everything in my carry-on. I've done this on four detecting trips to England. The first couple of times I had it all in my carry-on bag. The last time I took a Tesoro Cibola and XT70 with the shafts and control boxes in the carry-on. I had a back-pack too, so I put the coils in my back-pack. As Murphy's law says: You Know what he says. Anyway in Atlanta they apparently had a new girl on the X-Ray so I was stopped and they took me over to the side and took some things out of the bag, checked my bag for drugs or bombs and re-ran it through the X-Ray. I told the girl that was apparently training the other one "I bet the metal detectors in my bag confused the first girl". She didn't agree, but I'm sure it was. I would at least take the control box and the coil in my carry-on, because if they get lost, your whole trip might be ruined. This has been on British Airways. Skip
