FOD headphones

I've been using a generic set of headphones on my sovereign which also by a flick of a switch works on my whites xlt. The switch goes from mono to stereo. They also have individual volume controls which keep moving around. As soon as I saw the posting for the FOB headphones I went out to Radio Shack and picked up the components. To my dismay, Radio Shack up here in Canada doesn't carry the pro35's any more so I had to settle for their equivalent from Nec Tech. The project was pretty simple but the results are anything but. Nothing but pure, clean sound without the background noise. I've never heard sound like that before in all my seven years of using the minelab. THANK YOU FUNKY OLD DUD for the idea and the great plans. Also best forum I've ever seen.

Terry, what equivalent did you use? I made a set of these some time back but just used an old set of Sony headphone speakers I had and wasn't happy with the result. I'd like to try again but also couldn't find pro35's here in Canada.

I'll get the nec tech model number for you from radio shack tommorrow. In threw the package away along with the folding head band. They retail at $29.95 and were on sale for $20.00. I asked for pro35's and he said these were equivalent. I was impressed.

Went back tothe same store, talked to the same guy, and he said he sold me Panasonic shock waves rp-ht65. I told him that they were in a nec tech package and he said that was possible they are the same style. I'm confused but they do look the same and have the same frequency response. Maybe I'm getting senile. Take a look at the picture.

Here's what my headphones look like when completed.
everything looks the same as the panasonic shock waves.

Just got mine, took all of 8 minutes to set them up..Used the black high end craftsman headset rated at 30db noise reduction passive...I compared the end result to a high end detecting headset....there really is no comparison...I think a lot of the difference is the way the safety headset does such a better job of reducing the ambient noise. It helps make the sounds of the pro 35 speakers so much more pronounced and clean. The headset companies could learn a little from the Funky Old Dude!

Tell me exactly what we could learn from these Headphones. Thanks

I don't own timberwolf's..However I do own three other top of the line headsets made for detecting. The constant chatter of the forum got my curiosity up.. I guess I was bored..I wanted to see what I thought was a "ragtag" arrangement put up against some good headphones...Much to my amazement they were much quieter, and had a better tonal range than did the high quality professionally made sets. Go ahead and humor yourselves, get the components and spend the 8-10 minutes it takes to make one.

what could be learned if you're talking about the FOD set compared to the Timberwolfs. The specs on the new speakers that Timberwolf uses really tells the story. The tonal quality is simply second to none that I've used. This is something one really notices on a multi tone detector.
The speakers that FOD uses are the exact same ones that could be found in the older model Timberwolfs. They had plenty of volume but the clarity kind of dropped off on the real deep whispering type targets and they were'nt hearing aid compatable either like the new ones are now.
Stress relief cords, firm detent volume knobs that won't get bumped from where they were set and the head band on the Timberwolfs will last a lifetime.
All of the internal componets inside the Timberwolfs are top notch like the pots, switches, etc. and not cheap generic parts like I've seen in so many others I used over the years. A set of headphones that were designed for a metal detector USER is the real key here.
Now don't take this wrong, FOD put together a nice set of headphones he can be proud of but .... like eveything else ... there's always room for improvement <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">
And until somebody makes a BETTER set for the money, I'll stick with the Timberwolfs. I'm confident when wearing them, that alone makes a big difference too.
H.H.

I use the Timberwolfs on my Sovereigns as i like the volume they have for us that are hard of hearing. The Gray Ghost Uniprobes also have good volume on the Sovereign. Now on my Explorer I run a amp I got from Doc and here is where I like the SunRays Pros, the Troy Pros or any of the Gray Ghost. Now the one improvement that Timberwolf could make is making a set like the Ratphones or the Gray Ghost No Down Time as the cable which is normaly what give any headphone problems is replaceable in the feild. Now when a new set is sold a extra cable could come with it so if you ever did have a cable problem you can change the cable yourself and keep on detecting. These cable should be replaceable, so you can just order a new cable when you have you spare on on.
If this was done i think Timberwolfs would be a perfect set for most people that detect.

Not a problem Rick. We have been making those a while. All a customer has to do is request it be done when ordering. The price is higher for the though. HH, Ron

Mike you are probably right about the quality and clarity of the timerbwolfs. Have heard no one complain about them ever. But It is hard to beat the value/sound uality ratio of the FOD's, 19.95 x 2. I guess for the price involved, I haven't heard of a better headphone set...

I got mine from Art today and did a quick test, the Timberwolfs are louder for me and have a sharper tone to them while the FOD are more mellow tones to them. The FOD headphones are good, but if you need the volume on the Sovereign the Timberwolfs are still the loudest I have tried. My next test will be using them in the feild instead of my Timberwolfs on the Sovererign and then try these on my Explorer with the amp I have on it.
