Folks giving up on mx5?

coinjumper said:
I actually had mine for sale for a minute, the pros definitely outweigh the cons for me, thoughts anyone?

I do not need a better detector than what I have in the MX5, it does everything I would expect from it with a very fast and quick recovery speed in the small iron littered sites I tend to hunt at. I use the 5.3 Eclipse coil with the MX5 set up in Coin mode, 2 tone audio, all-metals accepted with 8 bars of sensitivity, just audible threshold. with VCO turned on in all metal mode.

What kind of average depth you getting on dime size targets ???

I set mine up the same settings Hombre. I have hit dimes with solid sound and id 8 to 9 inches. Even at the beach in wet sand, although I will say the beach is not where the MX5 shines. I have an MXT also. Main difference other than mixed mode and prospecting mode on the MXT seems to be the MX5 just a little deeper on some targets depending on the coil, but not as smooth sounding as the MXT. Put a small coil on the MX5, 5.3 or the 4x6 shooter and you can pick small charms and ear rings out of a littered mess with no problem. Can't tell you how many small pieces of jewelry I have found with the MX5. Oldest coin to date was a 1906 dime. using the SEF WSS coil.
good luck and happy hunting.
Matt

Hi Elton,

...I found my birth year (1952) rosie at about 8 inches deep with the 6½" 5.3 Eclipse coil. I use the 5.3 coil most of the time and regularly find coins down to 6 to 8 inches deep. In most of the places I hunt at if your detector won't go 8", well... you may as well just stay home.

I'm a knob and switch guy and the hardest thing for me is the push buttons, along with my m6 I really like my mx5, but haven't given it a fair shake because the 6 is what I grab. I have 4 days next week to hunt some private property and plan on putting my mx5 to work.

Same here ...............thank you for the response.

If you don't have a lot of trash in the area you are searching the stock coil goes really deep Coinjumper. I really like just tapping the suspend button while I dig, use a pin pointer anyway.
Wish you the best of luck!
Matt

Thanks Matt...well uh..I don't have any concentric coils, I'm working on it though, I have my old reliable 6x10 for the brushy areas and 13" ultimate for those wide open areas, and a couple more coils.

you know, it's kinda silly-I got mine and was excited the first few weeks but ended up grabbing either the Ace or Compadre because it was so easy and the targets weren't deep at my locations. I, too, am gonna renew my love affair with this machine. It's a gem and I don't know why I haven't been using it that much. Especially after finding my first 8" dimes in a long while.

I sold my first MX5 about a year ago and in that time I tried several other detectors in the same price range. Last month I traded one of these detectors for a MX5 and I am now happy again. When you see MX5's for sale in the range of 300 to 400 bucks, I feel it is a BARGAIN. While Randy and Monte prefer the concentric coils, I replaced mine with a SEF 10x12. When I need a small coil, I hook up the 5.3 which is really a 6.75 inch concentric coil. The MX5 has some quirks like a sputtery threshold and a three function button that toggles between disc, all metal, and pinpoint that one has to get a feel for to quickly change modes. Whites claims 30 plus hours on the batteries, but I believe it more like 45 to 50. I have only changed the batteries once on my old MX5 and once on the new one when I had 45 plus hours, but there were bars showing(I should have ran it dry). Speaking of depth and separation. I routinely dig coins 8 plus inches and some approaching 10 inches. I dug a large cent a year ago about 12 inches deep. I like the fact that you can creep or hover over a target and isolate a coin surrounded by trash. The MX5 does this particular task as good or better than any detector I have ever owned. Finally, there are loads of coil options for this detector which shares coils with the super popular MXT. All in all a near perfect detector.

I run an M6 and my wife runs the MX5. She does really well with it and she keeps the 4x6 shooter coil on it most the time. I used it one day while we were hunting and hit a dime at 7 inches with the 4x6 coil. Its a ver capable machine and fun to use. I myself am a knob guy but I love the features of the MX5. I feel its one of Whites sleeper units. Its far better than most people know. I just cant put down my M6 though. Its so simple and powerful but the MX5 is just as good if not a tad better in some places.

Have been using mine more lately. Found 3 rings, ony one was gold but was all bent up by a lawn mower. Was shocked to find that relying on the vdi without listening to the tones is not a good idea. Got a solid tone like a nickel, but the vdi was 24-normally where square tab in the nickel area falls.Turned out to be a nickel. Tons of clad. Man, this thing is deep for a single frequecy detector.

I've come to the realization that I look at my m6 screen to much slingshot, next outing I'm going to cover it and just listen. Since I came from the beep and dig machines my good finds have lessened because of relying on the vdi

Yeah- and it's getting used to the sounds. The nickel tone was solid, the ring tone was gobbledygook, but was solid, since it was in the tab zone. So I've been checking a lot of solid hits till I get used to it. The high "mosquito in the ear" tone is my favorite-stops me in my tracks.

How do you like the 13"??

Havent found anything deep, because i havent passed over anything deep? dont know, great coverage and separation, jury still out for me on depth though, oh and very light!
