Hi Eric,
What would be the advantage or disadvantage of reducing the pulse delay to 10 usec or so on a PI that was to be used for hunting gold nuggets on land? Would one see much of an increase in sensitivity to smaller gold over a detector with a 15 usec delay? Any ideas as to what problems might arise?
Thank you,
Reg

Hi Reg,
You would certainly pick up smaller nuggets and get more range on bigger ones. There are no major problems in doing this but the magnetic ground signal will also be greater. However, with ground balancing this is not going to be a major issue.
Eric.

Hi Eric,
Thank you for your fast response. I hope this is something that will be considered when you produce a new nugget hunting machine.

Hi Reg,
The Aquastar already runs at 10uS minimum delay and this has proved to be more sensitive to small gold and gold chains. I would certainly run at at least as short a delay in any new gold machine. For the Aquastar, the limitation is the conductivity of a salt wet beach.
Eric.

Hi Eric,
Does that mean shorter delays than 10 usec may be practical on a PI to be used for land use?
Reg

Hi Reg,
Yes, but it all depend what you want to do. I discussed this a while back with some prospectors in Oz and they were not interested in finding very small particles of gold. Only nuggets from 0.5gm and upwards. You can of course use the delay control to set the sensitivity you personally want. For delays shorter than 5uS you start sensing other things, such as changes in ground conductivity, tree roots etc., so more false signals will occur.
Eric.

Hi Eric,
Thank you again, I wasn't sure what the limits are nor the negative impacts. You have explained it in an excellent manner that a novice like me can understand.
Thanks again,
Reg
