Hello Eric,
I posted this message several days ago, but you were away so I'm reposting it.
I'd really like to get my Deepscan C400 repaired if you think it will be economically feasible. I know its an older unit, but it has always performed well for me.
The Deepscan C400 has really been a great little detector for me....I purchased it from Stu Auerbach at KellyCo (small outfit then..) back in 1982 and took it with me everywhere as I continued my Naval career. It's been to several European countries, North Africa, South America and the Caribbean.
The problems arose when the battery pack gave up the ghost and some guy convinced me that the "C"-cells could be replaced with "AA" batteries to reduce weight with no loss of performance....don't know if that in itself is the problem or not, but it was a few weeks before I could use the unit after the switcheroo and it hasn't worked since.
Thanks,
Butch

Hi Butch,
Just replacing the C cells with AA nicads would not damage the detector, however the unit would not run for nearly as long between charges. Going to a NiMh pack using AA cells would save weight and get you somewhere near the life of the original C's.
Sounds as though something else has happened to the detector. If the batteries were connected the wrong way round (even momentarily), there are three components that are likely to fail. I'll see if I still have the servicing information.
Eric.
