Forget coin gardens, this is what I do - - - - - - -

I keep a thin 3/4" (dia) broom stick cut at 5". This is just bigger than a dime on the cut end, then just tape a dime to the end of the stick. (I use a silver dime for realism, LOL) Use this at your sites, pound it into the ground with the dime at the bottom. Then you can check your machine at the actual site, pound it into noisy areas that you are hunting to see what the crap you should hear. Works good and gives you confidence that your machine is working. You know the target is 6" down and right where it is because you have the stick top showing, there is no question. I'm sure you could build a on edge stick also, but I never have done it. If the ground is hard you can pre tap the hole with a 5/8" re-bar.

Everybody should know that confidence is the key to finds. That's why when you start finding coins you find more and more. I only use a 5" stick, pretty good depth but one that the XS has no problem with no matter what the situation. It's a good depth to train your machine for. I have dug many coins at 7" to 8" but most of my old coins are around 5" or 6"

Great tip Andrus ~ thanks.

Seems like a good idea to me. Guess the wood does not alter the signal in any way from how it would travel in dirt or you would have noticed that. I could see how you could slot it to put a coin on end in.

I went to Home Depot and got a bunch of paint stirrers. I hot-glued all sorts of coins an trash an bullets to the end and labelled the other other end. I can either drop these on the ground, or, poke em into a tilled section of my backyard.

I have all clad change, a mini ball, bottle cap, pull tab, silver dime, and silver quarter.

I have a gold coin in my coin collection. I am thinking of wrapping that coin in a plastic protector and glueing it to a stick too.

I just rubber band them all up and put them in my kit.

Works great.

What do you carry with you to pound the 3/4" piece into the ground?

I was thinking about cutting a second short piece of the broom stick (perhaps an inch or so).
* Then shave one end of the shorter piece to a point, like sharpening a pencil.
* Then hot glue the dime between the two pieces of the broom stick.

This might make it easier to drive the stick into the ground.

How do you fill the hole after you remove the stick?
