Found a little SILVER today!..and a learned something about my SE that....

I thought had happened for me before...but now I'm sure of it...which I will get to later. Also found a nasty looking injun and a v-nickel. The 4 wheaties were 1909...1919...1925...and 1945.
The indian head was a 1905...not that it matters! The V-Nickel...my FIRST one with the SE...is a 1912. The Barber is an 1899 and was a TOUGH find...which I will get to shortly. I also found the Grover Cleveland presidential coin at about 9". Don't know what it's worth or how old it is...but it was fun to find. I thought for sure I had a silver quarter...but oh well.
Now to the 1899 Barber dime. I found it in the middle of a long dead null. Seriously...there was about a 20 foot section of this park that the SE just completely nulled at as there was iron everywhere. I have been really successful hunting after switching back to conductive sounds so I didn't want to switch back to All metal and get confused again. I was using the 10 x 14 excelerator coil and it separates nicely. Anyway...I just stood there in one spot and crept and I mean crept the coil along at about a 10 second per sweep speed and also dropped the sensitivity at this dead spot to 22 semi auto.... and sure enough...out pops an intermittemt high pitched flutey tone with the cursor dancing around top right to top center. I circled the hole and the sound would disappear...normally this is iron...but in two spots around the hole the sound was definately sweet...sweet enough for me to dig it. About 7 to 8" down at an angle...out pops the 1899 Barber dime.
Had it not been for the unmistakable tones I would not have dug because it did not give good tones all around the hole...only in two spots...but they were great sounding so I took a chance! It was laying at an angle...almost on it's edge and deep... and the 10 x 14 sniffed it out of a null. I now know I can find a coin directly in and over iron even in conductive sounds. I rechecked that spot with my cz70 and it was completely iron...and I mean every bit of it. I'll be going back for more sometime soon. I don't recommend hunting in a null and I feel it's best to avoid nulling as much as possible...but in extreme cases like this one...it did pay off for me. Normally I don't get much nulling hunting in semi auto...at least not long ones...but this was extreme trash!

Im glad to see you get out.Down south it is to dry to hunt, the ground is like rock.I have been diging all sounds that bounce in the right side of the screen lately and it pays off once in a while and dont think later maybe I should have dug that target. My pouch that I have usually has more trash then goodies but it is still fun, you never know untill you dig it.

Great finds Bryce. I hunt in Iron Mask -12 to -14 with my XS and find silver like that all the time. Since the Explorer can sniff out silver, Indian Heads and deep wheaties in iron as well as it does the "all metal / ferrous tones" isn't really necessary - my personal opinion. And my detector is hot, hot, hot on nickels with that setting.

This has happened to me many times over but if you work these Signals, you can get a good idea if it is either Iron or a Good Target. In fact, that just happened to me this past weekend with a Wheat Penny. Although the Signal was a screamer, I dug a Plug and went in with the Sunray X-1 Probe and found the Wheat Penny. Though the Wheat was a tough Target to find even in the hole with Iron in it, I found it and every time I find something Good in a hole with Iron, I just makes me happy to know that I can get some of the Good Targets in amungst the worst Iron Trash Spots. Sounds like you have a good Park to hunt in and I hope the Luck continues for you. Continued Success, Good Luck and HH.:detecting:

Is this the American Idol of metal detectorists?

Last night I was doing what you were but I was using the 12 inch SunRay coil. At this old park I went to an area that has some trash in it. I began creeping like you (not that you are a creep) he he, and got a hit in the very middle of iron on three sides. Just the very tip of the coil would make the coin sing. I could only hit it for about an inch or so and then I'd get iron nulling on all three sides. Had I been swinging normally I would have missed the Canadian Large Cent altogether. The front is beautiful but the back has so much crap on it as to be unreadable for the date so I have to go to the store to get some Hydrogen Peroxide. I found some other interesting artifacts last night doing that same slow mode of swinging and listening.

Nice job and thanks for the interesting post.
By the way, you are a very brave soul using conductive tones in iron like that or you just love punishment? I use ferrous tones most all the time now.

I have found a few of these through the years of different presidents. The back should have a bio. on him, right? One guy said they were part of the 60's Shell Gas station coins. You got those aluminum ones at the pump but could send them in at some point for the nicer ones like you found. Nice silver!

I'm wondering if the sensitivity paramiters are a little different on the xs and SE. 26 semi auto seems to give me the best signal on deeper targets after some experimenting. At 22 the signal doesn't seem as good for me at my sites...and likewise at 28 it breaks up more. I do like semi auto 22 in heavier iron sites though. Thanks again for all your tips. Your posts keep me begging to hunt more because of your silver finds.

gotta' dig those "iffies". I would rather dig a piece of iron than walk away not knowing if I passed up a barber or seated on edge. Hope you get some hunting in soon.

There is sooooooo many different ways to run the Explorer's that it is almost impossible to find the BEST settings unless you are at the site that is being hunted and then you must adjust the settings due to your ground conditions and what your preference of hunting is. Good Luck and HH Bryce and I hope the SILVER starts to jump into your pouch. :detecting:

Great story Bryce, and a great hunt. Good work!

Hello Bryce, you had a great day that day!Hope many more to come! I can't wait to have a day like that! Could you give me some impute on the 14X10 coil? How do it compare with the stock coil? Also, what is your favorite headphones with the SE? Thanks, erb

Hey man, yeah...I've been hunting. I've pulled like 8 rings out of my last 3 hunts. You must have missed the posts. Most of my action was right around Memorial Day weekend.

I plan on doing some night hunting tomorrow and probably Sunday as well but I HAVE been just a TAD bit busy these last few days. I picked this baby up on Monday, brand new...got 350 miles on it so far! :)

Dislikes:
1) It feels like one heavy sucker!
2) Did I mention it feels heavy?
3) Depth doesn't seem to be much more than stock coil.

Likes:
1) It gets great ground coverage.
2) You can run it very hot.
3) It's much more stable than the stock coil for me.
4) It separates well for a large coil.
5) It's very well consructed...very good quality.
6) While a depth increase may not be that noticeable...it is at least as deep as stock and maybe slightly deeper.

Remember...these are only my opinions and this is in my IL soil.
I've heard these are great beach coils and get great depth there.

with the Harley than I have the metal detector in this heat. One of the guys I ride with has a vulcan and the other has a V-Star. Looks like you picked up a nice one.
Have fun and be safe
