Found a ring

John D.

New member
It has been raining off and on for two days here in VA. I covered my 1350 with a plastic bag and went dirt fishing. I found a professional Fireman ring, looks like a class ring. It has 14K TGE on the inside. I have looked all over the net and can't find what TGE stands for. Can someone out there please help me.
John buys gold coins with his clad finds, I am going to buy a scanner!
Thank You in advance,
Your Friend,

It most likely means its gold plated. One typical marking is "HGE," which stands for "Heavy Gold Electroplat" I have found other references to plating as applied by the Esposito Jewelry, of Providence Rhode Island, who uses the letters TGE.

Sometimes the stamp doesn't get on all the way. The T might have been mis-marked. Usually class rings are good gold, not plated.

Traditionally thats true and most makers still offer the "good gold" option. But, I read a thread lately that talked about how that is changing.
As a way to cut manufacturing costs and offer a lower cost alternative to traditional commemorative rings, the makers of such things are now offering just what we are talking about here - plating on a base metal.

Wanna guess one of the companies that was mentioned in the thread? Yep, you got it - Esposito.[/size]

Not sure about the T but GE stands for gold electroplate. The T could stand for thin as some rings are stamped HGE = heavy gold electroplate.
