Found Gold for first time with Gamma 6000!

I never thought I'd find a gold ring, but in my first season metal detecting I uncovered one about six inches under. It is a big 14K gold mens wedding ring. It was on an abandoned lot of grass and trees that had a church on it until it was moved in the 1950s. Date inscribed on inside is 9-5-06. We are thinking it may be from 1906. Great shape still.

It actually registered in high 70s as zinc and bounced into 90s as quarter as well. Manual says gold should show up as nickel in the 50s. Anyone have any thoughts on that part of it?

Great find! Yes, BIG gold will read that high...so this must be pretty big...Mens class rings chime in the zinc signals...

When it comes to gold, a person just never knows...from iron to Q.....thats a super old ring!...Congratulations on a wonderful find!:clapping:

Very nice recovery. Neat that it had a date in it. And as Mud said, big gold will read way up there. HH jim tn

Thanks, yeah it had both wife and husband's initials and the date. Yeah I was crazy excited, yelling and high fiving my friend that was with me!

you gotta keep that one as a trophy!... Its seldom a guy finds a ring that is dated that long ago...I actually found the same kind of mens ring last week, initials and dated 11-23-18...i doubt mine was as large as yours, but still, I got the shivvers!...

Yes I definitely am going to keep it. That awesome you found one too! Yeah I was so excited when I saw it, I was yelling and gave my friend emphatic high fives and he was yelling, was great.

As others have said, a big gold ring will have a higher reading than a smaller one, mostly. What can put the reading way up is the other metals in the ring (besides gold). In this case, it is a large ring, 14K...that means there is almost 42% of other metals mixed with the gold. If those other metals in your ring are silver and copper, then the reading could be expected to be very high indeed, given that it is a big ring.

So it turns out this ring was from 1906. I was able to find the church the marriage happened and get names. I then tracked down the grandson of the man who lost it and gave it to him. He was absolutely amazed and grateful! I feel like it is where it belongs now. It's worth a lot more to him and his family than it was to me.

Love reading things like this. Nice of you to go to the trouble to locate the owner of the ring, I bet it made the grandson and you very happy. Good job!!!

Thank you, yeah it was a great moment. A family member used to write for the city newspaper is planning on doing a article all about it. Should be fun.

Huge congrats !!!!!!
