Found My Oldest IH Today W/X-70

Got out for a couple hours today and went back to an old spot that at one time was a stage stop and hotel. I have in the past found an old gold ring with a garnet and several relics and buttons at this spot. At present it is a corn field and has been for probably over a hundred years. I just had the feeling that there are some old coins lingering yet in this field. Well today I stumbled onto one with my X70. You won't find an older IH as this was the first year of mintage, 1859. It is in real good condition although the photo doesn't do it justice. Full liberty and preserved real well in the sandy soil.

Wish I could have made it over today and helped you hunt the corn field. But by the looks of it, you didn't need any help! Looks like you caught on to that X-70 just fine! here I am left with what I "think" is a 1910 wheatie from yesterday and you're digging proof coins. :lol:

Having found many indian heads only found one that could match his relative condition. Most older copper coins come out of the ground in poor condition...After years in the hobby the older the better and great condition is a plus even though its not worth much bucks wise...Nice find and would check that area again for perhaps an old silver which would be a plus....Hope this answers your question..
 
The Indian Head cents were minted from 1859 to 1909. It is 88% copper and 12% nickel. My Red Book reference guide for US coins indicates an 1859 IH cent in very-fine condition is valued at well over $100. From what I have seen of this one, it is definitely considered to be at least a VF. HH Randy
 
Dan, I too have found many IH's in fact a132 in past two years, but many are in poor cond. and most all are a dark green patina. That's what made this one different was it's color and condition. I have several real nice ones but usually as I stated nice dark green patina. The neat thing with this one is that it was the first year of minting the IH. Back in 1973 Digger and I were coin shooting a park and I dug a 1909 S, which also has the full Liberty on the headband. So now I have the first year and the last year. The 1909 S is worth in the $400 to $500 range. Now for my next key date the 1877...

Frank, Even though he is my younger brother, I probably should have listened sooner. Oh well if I had have listened to him I wouldn't have got to try all of the detectors I did in the past couple of years. I am getting closer to that Large cent too. By the way the one I found last year didn't count. You know what I'm talking about. Was a good joke though.

Thanks Randy, You are always welcome to come over. It was a short notice for me to go also and it gets dark so early now. It is a really ruff hunt as the field has been tilled and put a wear on the old legs in a short time. Just like some of our other spots of lately. I would say Spring will be good after the soil settles out. Meanwhile, Research, Research, Research.

and that one is in great condition. Its not often but every once in a while a good one like that pops out of the ground. My oldest also came from a cornfield but you beat me by 5 years and a couple of grades condition wise. WTG!

Thanks Tom, It was found on the Missouri River bottom land about 75% sand so when it came out of the ground it didn't even have any soil attached to it. That explains it's condition.
