Found this at a 1880’s sawmill

Can anyone help me ID this, Its definitely not period, Thanks

What does it measure ? Was it on that stem ? Can you tell what kind of metal its made of ? Would you be able to take a couple more pics at different angles ? Sorry for all the questions , its all part of being a metal detective... Clues ... Interesting to say the least .. Is there any writing or engraving on it ? Patent dates, etc.
 
Thanks for your interest ronaldj2, It was found in one piece, completely buried on a steep mountain slope near the base of a cliff. My best guess would be it’s made of brass.

Some type of a steam whistle or valve???
 
I’ve googled the heck out of that thing with no luck, the old steam engine was made by Ames Iron Works Oswego NY in 1863
 
Your right its not period. Parco is a division of Stanley tools. Your item is part of a sprayer probably for fire fighting, we use pack backs similar in appearance.

Thanks Laplander, it makes sense because there was a major fire in the area awhile back
 
looks like some kind of a steam release for a steem powered engine
