fresh buried coins

ellis

New member
today i buried a silver dime, quarter, and a half:the dime is 4" deep--the w/quarter is 5 " deep--the k/half at 6 "--the dirt in my yard is black and it' hard to find a place w/out rust readings, but i selected places as clean as possible. then i tried the se with the 4.5x7 excelerator.it did very well, but i think i have found what most folks on here call iffy signals.but i know the minelabs are (halo)machines so will take time to get the halo effect.now for the surprise---the sovxs w/8" coinsearch gave a much better reading.if i could have gotten an se with the sound system of the sovxs i would've been willing to pay more for it--but i love them both--the best of the best.--hh:minelab::jump:

Silver won't have a halo. Also in burying those coins you really have to compress the soil to approximate the soil with older buried coins. I usually put in an inch of dirt and than pound on it and then the next inch and so on. Then water it and let it dry. I also wonder about your depth, for the Minelabs, I never bury anything less than 6 inches deep and go from there. Under 6 inches, thats too easy, but its your garden. I use a silver dime for all depths.........I do not want the coin to be a variable, just the different depths as my variance, so I can hear how it changes as it gets deeper.:detecting:

thanks big-ears,good info i remembered reading a post about tamping the dirt-and i did do that--must've been your post i read--bury dimes only sounds good --i did'nt think of that--any more good info will be greatly appreciated.i've been rolling clad coins tonite to cash in and order the 10x12 sef..seems like others are having a ball with it--i still have to do more testing at different sensitivity and gain etc.taking your advice and bury more dimes deeper..hh..:minelab::usaflag:

Have you tried playing with your tones under audio? What ive found is The TH TONE standard setting of 5 gives me a well spread of finds. However, i tend to have to sift thru a lot of pennies. When i move it to 9 you can really hear the difference between a dime and a penny and my dime and quarter finds increase. At 10 i tend to miss more quarters. Big-ears is correct, halo effect only comes off of corroding metals leaching into the soil around it. Ive taken out large chunks of dirt and with a knife dug a whole in the side at the exact depth needed then incerted the coin. Seems to work pretty well. Some people use planters as well. If it just the difference in sound you are trying to hear you can adjust your gain or turn your sensitivity down slowly. The explore also takes into account the size of the target so remember the tones may change a bit as will the cursor location. Much like a small piece of gold reading DEEP but is just on the surface.
