frustrated with pop tops

I am getting frustrated with the trash I dig using my Garrett Seahunter Mark II. I can find a pull tab at 12 inches in the wet sand and today I pulled about 25 tabs and 10 bottle caps plus a pair of scissors at about 16 inches. Is it possible that I am missing the gold and silver or maybe there just isn't any in the places I'm hunting. Is there any truth to sounding different when you find gold or silver with a PI.

Most of us get excited when we find pulltabs. That is one of the better clues that the gold is still there and the otherguys who hunted before us used disc. But a rule of hand is 1500 pulltabs to every piece of gold on dry sand and 100 to 200 per every piece of gold found in the water.
All these handrules change due to what type of beach it is...a visitor beach, a native beach (all live there and raised there), Rental condo beach, deserted beach... Know your beaches...Frank

Hi Ron,
I don't think you're missing the gold, your later assumption is more likely correct. The sea tends to sort the lights and heavies, and often these are then buried, so even though you found the trash at 12 inches, the coins and rings will be deeper still, or more likely closer to the water in another place. Either an isolated patch, or in a long narrow line running parallel to the water, it could be just below high water mark, mid way between high and low water, or right on the wet line (where the angle of beach quickly flatens)
The moon, wind and currents all have a part to play in where the heavies drop out. When I start finding the light stuff I quickly move on scanning for the heavies. There are always exceptions of course, and I've found gold all on it's own with no particular reason to explain why it was in that position (not recent drops of course)
As Frank has said, every beach is a little different in where it habitually deposits the goodies. When you start finding lead sinkers, coins, and bullets, then slow down and listen hard because gold could be close

Hi Ron,
One experienced beach detectorist who wrote a series of articles for a UK treasure magazine titled "Successful Beach Detecting", says that the sea is a great sorting agent. If you are finding lots of pop tops/pull tabs, then move on. Gold being relatively heavy, will gradually be moved to a low point, while aluminium will stay high. This means that gold will sink until it reaches a harder layer, or gradually be washed down the beach to the low water line. Gold could be under the pop tops, but wait till another day when the pop tops and lighter stuff have move to a different area.
Eric.

Thank you for the responses. I went to a different beach today and found fewer pull tabs and bottle caps and a whole lot more fishing weights and lures. Although I did not find any gold still I think its because the beaches I go to do not have that many beach goers. Mostly fishing and poor folk. So there just isn't much gold to find. I am sure there is some but its going to be like looking for a needle on the beach without a detector. I did find a little clad and a lot of iron trash. due to the amount of trash on these beaches I must be a fool to use a PI but most of the fun is finding stuff, right?

Hi Ron,
Your IP address shows that you're connecting somewhere near Virginia Beach. Surely there's got to be some good spots nearby where the locals go to cool off on hot summers days?
Do some research and find out where they went swimming in the 19th century, they had to go within a buggy ride then, no hopping down to Florida for the weekend.
You'll get onto it I'm sure
