I read the Troy machines were based on the Tesoro. Can someone shed some light on what is different about the Troy machines?

I do not know much but I will share what I learned from a seminar given by the designer and engineer of the X2 ... Troy.

Troy said that at that time he wanted a detector built with higher quality and lower noise factor chips and transistors.
This would allow the receiver to run at higher gain and give much better depth and sensitivity.
The result was the Shadow X2 and it did indeed detect deeper and react faster than other detectors of that time.
That along with surface mounted components was a fairly big advancement in detector performance and dependability.

He contracted with Tesoro to make the Shadow X2 to his specifications as he did not have the manufacturing facility's at that time.
A few years later Tesoro came out with their own u-max series and I think (this is my opinion) they based that line upon Troy's designs and ideas.
Troy moved the operation from Tesoro and set up his own shop making the X5 ... not sure who made the X3.

All in all the Shadow X2 was a BIG success (one hot detector) and found great favor among treasure hunters.

Well ... That is about all I know about it and hopefully someone who knows more will fill in the missing parts.
It would make a very interesting story if all the details were known.

Willee if I remember correctly I think this is a bit off. Tesoro had the Umax machines before they built the X2 for Troy, the problem came when Tesoro followed Troys 9" coil design with their 9X8" coil design(which is Tesoros standard coil today on most of their detectors). the older umax machines where fitted with the brown 8" coil with the hole in the center. it was the coil not the Umax design that was the problem.
and it was quite awhile before he followed up with the X5 and X3, both built by Fisher.

Fisher made the x5 and x3 for the for Troy he did not make them his self.

Correct, X2 was Tesoro built but when Troy designed the X3/X5 line, they were built in Palo Alto (I believe) by Fisher before they were acquired by FT. Last I knew, they would still service and provide parts for them. I've had both the X5 and X3 (still have it), and they are of very good quality, super easy on batteries (1 nine volt which seems to last forever), durable and extremely deep and sensitive to gold, brass and other mid-range targets (not that they aren't very good on silver, etc., but gold is where they shine). Only detector I've owned that will hit a thin gold chain from several inches. Main difference between the X5 and X3 is the X5 provides a couple more bells and whistles including manual ground balance for a finer degree of balance in bad ground. Hope this helps.

I had my X3 serviced in january. They are still great machines. I love mine and will not sell it. I would recommend the 5X10 dd coil. it is a little heavier but covers much more ground!
