g2 in tot lots

How is the G2 in the tot lots? I imagine it is great to be able to null on the iron bars and still get close. I am thinking the 10x5 would be ideal for this.. maybe even more so than the 5". Any thoughts? I am a jewelry hunter more so than anything. I will probably use it for relics at some point but I am on sports fields/ schools 90% of the time.

Thanks!

In tot lots....well...it will pick up every little morsel of can slaw and anything else that is there. If ya dont mind digging, you can clean the place out. I like mine in the relic fields so far. I only have a few hours on it in the fields and a few hours in the parks, but it's for sure going to be my go to machine for a while. It's lightweight and super sensitive...who could ask for anything more.

Thanks LJ. Can you usually tell when it is super small? Like will you get a large signal bar but a "small" sound in the phones if it is tiny foil near the surface? Or is deep and small the same sound on this machine?

With a bit of time the audio on the G2 is very informative, so yes you can tell the size. But the problem is, what if that small size is a gold earring? If you are after gold in tot lots, and you want even small gold ..earrings, thin chains etc. you are gonna have to dig it all. Now with relic hunting I can tell usually a small 22 bullet or casing and usually dont have to dig. I have found also that good targets: CW bullets, coins buttons etc have a more mellow sound than trash such as foil, aluminum and even shotgun shell hulls. Its amazing that for a digital machine the G2 gives you just as much audio info in it's "beeps" as an analog detector such as a Tesoro

Very true about the lots and small targets sekypaleo. I was thinking more so when I get tired of digging small items for jewelry and want to run lower disc but cherry pic on which ones I want to investigate. Glad to know there is a lot of language on the G2! I usually use the Compadre for jewelry so this is going to be a bit more powerful for that purpose and getting micro jewelry :)

Compadre is a darn fine machine...no doubt. But if there are times you want to cherrry pick...the G2 will be much more informative than the Compadre with audio and TID's. It just takes time with G2 to learn its little nuances in the audio. I like the fact that if I know all the good targets are deep, I can use that loud squawk to know shallow and move on...without even looking at TID. I have an AKA Sorex Pro which goes just as deep as my G2 with the Ultimate coiI on it....but I much prefer the audio of the G2. swear the G2 is just the best detector I have ever used.

Thanks! It will be here in 5hrs and counting LOL. I am curious how it will do around some heavy duty EMI that even the Compadre goes nuts on. I had my Omega near there once and it was impossible to use. I basically wanted a machine that would scream on low conductors so if jewelry is there I wont miss it! Should prove to work well in the occasional iron infested farm site I hit as well. I AM EXCITED!

I had an Omega...got rid of it just because of the EMI issues...it was useless on about 50% of the sites I tried to hunt with it, unless sensitivity was turned down to 40 or so...then whats the point? So far I have found the G2 is much much more forgiving with EMI...in 4 years I have only encountered EMI problems at 5 sites. One was a site I had hunted several times before that has power lines bisecting it and I had zero issues...this particular day it was so bad that the G2 was useless...I mean completely. A friend was hunting with me there with a G2 and his was going nuts too...very strange...must have had power surging that day I guess.

that this one hunter had found that if you hunted upwind of a EMI area that the effects were very minimal, I haven't tried that out yet but will try that next chance I get. Maybe the wind has something to do with it? HH

Sure he wasn't talkin about coyote hunting?

Have you heard about this?

Inter-Bloody-ference!

A pain in the ear

BY JONATHAN PORTER

Ive noticed three major types of interference since the inception of PI machines; one is the earths magnetic field following the contours of the ground, the other is a reflection of this via atmospheric occurrences and finally man-made which is by far the worst. I can deal with the naturally occurring ones because you know they are going to dissipate given time but it is the man-made ones we seem to have no control over, in fact they seem to be getting worse as urban sprawl and aircraft travel increase.

A few years back Frieda and I bought a property in central Queensland where a large high energy power line (66 000 volts) runs right through the guts of some of the best gold diggings on the block. As you can imagine this plays havoc with our modern high sensitivity gold machines, to the point where I dont make a habit of working in the general vicinity because of a low tolerance to any sort of interference (I hate interference with a passion). Last year I headed west on my own leaving Frieda and the boys at home to have a break from the nomadic life style for a season; actually to my embarrassment Frieda would often find more for the day than I would in the west, where I was in supposedly prime nugget country.

When I returned I asked Frieda to take me around and show me where she had been finding her gold. To my amazement it was all within cooee of the bloody power lines; how the hell do you put up with all that interference, Cancel mode? Nope, I just wait for the wind to change says Frieda. Thats how I ended up so ugly I replied, but seriously how do you work so close? Looking me straight in the eye, (which means she means business and I had better start paying attention) she repeats, I wait for the wind to change and then I can work right up to them. Well I had to try this out for myself so on the next decent breeze that came by I grabbed Frieda (with her 11 DD) and headed up to interference hell, using a 14 DD and normal settings I was surprised to find that it was manageable, yet on the down-wind side it was horrendous!

It seems that the energy created by power lines is affected by wind, so much so that if the breeze is strong enough you can detect very close without undue problems (on the up-wind side), but heaven help you if you go down-wind because the interference can carry for miles. Frieda the clever little observant thing had noticed this and taken full advantage of this most unusual phenomenon massing an impressive five ounces for the season, all of which was found detecting roughly six hours a week with the kids in tow.

If you have high voltage power lines running through your favorite prospecting area and would like to try your luck in some of the untouched ground, then (dosing up on some beans!), wait for a very windy day to reap your reward; only remember to keep up-wind!!

now the above article is the most astonishing, amazing, brilliant, surreal, fantastic, bizarre thing I have ever read on this forum! This is the best tip in MD ever

LOVE IT!!

Thanks for bringing it up

well back to the original post.. I don't like this machine in trashy parks. Away it goes!

That makes me want to go out and find a spot with some high power lines and play in the wind. There should be some good spots that never get detected. Thanks
