Gamma 6000 Tips?

So far my wife and I love our Gamma 6000. It is our first metal detector that we have owned. Is it necessary to invest in the 5DD coil for heavy trash areas? Also, I've heard it is necessary to have volume on max to hear all signals? Otherwise any tips would be appreciated. We are beginners but found 12 or so coins in about 4 hours that we have hunted.

As long as the volume is 5 or higher you should be able to hear everything. Wearing headphones makes it easier. I usually have mine set to 6 when I've got them on.

Yes, I think the small coils help any detector in trashy areas and around metal structures such as playground equipment. I use the gamma myself, and use the 5x9 nels coil mostly for my type of hunting. Good luck CG

Obitz88 you have me beat ! I just got a t2 myself and am under 4hrs hunting with it but I've only gotten around 10 clad. But I'm confident that I've got you beat in pulltabs and foil. I have piles and piles of worthless pulltab/foil/aluminum screwtop junk. I swear I'm just a few piles of pulltabs away from going nuts. Which is why I'm posting to you. I've read somewhere that if you want jewelry then don't discriminate jewelry range signals which are foil/pulltabs/nickles/aluminum screwtops. Beep and dig those if you discriminate out you'll likely pass over when you do eventually come across irregular shaped jewelry like cross shaped pendants, necklace, maybe rings etc. Good hunting with your Gamma!

Thank you. Yeah I hear you have to dig a whole lot of junk in order to get the good stuff! So rings will likely come up as pulltab/foil?

Rings like most things have a range of characteristics because they are not all uniform. Some are thin some are thick, some have settings with points etc. The composition is not uniform either some are 10k some 14k even 10k vs 10k some are alloyed with different metals. The way it lays isn't uniform either, it could be flat, on it's side, at an angle etc. The soil that surrounds it, the other objects in that soil like nails that could mask it, alter the signal etc. There are so many variables that rings like everything else come as a range. Some people found gold ring to id as 49 (on t2) while others have found id to be 78 (t2) 49-78 is a huge range and that range overlaps with other similar signal ranges. Foil 40-55, nickel 58, pull tab 60-75, zinc penny 78, etc. So ultimately like gambling all you can do is increase or decrease your chances with techniques like card counting, reading the other player's body language, tells, etc but ultimately you don't definitely know. Metal detecting for the vast majority of us is a hobby don't ever loose sight of that. If you want to find gold for a living then your tools should be a drill rig to test the ground then heavy equipment to move ground to strip mine. Otherwise, like me, like most of us, enjoy the relaxation, the suspense, and the fun of this hobby. :) If you recover enough jewelry to pay for ONE of your detectors in a year or two you might be average. If you recover enough to pay for your detector AND cover gas going to/from the hunting sites then your doing better than most. Good luck hunting ! :)

No we are definitely doing it as a hobby and will probably never pay for the detector! We just love doing it and it's more for the history, it's awesome pulling things that are 50-100+ years old from the ground. Even a bottle opener from the 1940s was so much fun to uncover even though it's basically worthless. Like you said it is for relaxation and suspense too.

We pulled 6 wheat pennies from my sisters house and it was so much fun even though they are worth very little. We are thinking of doing some sort of art work to put on wall of junk and or coins. We are addicted already, so much fun!

Im jealous! Seems you have some great sites to hunt in. Most housing here are relatively new and the parks and beaches are either hit hard or no metal detecting allowed. I'm hoping to find good sites to hunt and find something more interesting than clad and trash :)

I'm in San Diego, all the places with old history are either under concrete, private property, or designated some sort of historical area that of course you can't get near it with a metal detector. I'm sure I'll slowly find places to hunt eventually. Good luck on your Iowa hunts !

The 5 inch dd coil works wonders on the Gamma 6000,I leave that coil on at all times and use the elliptical concentric and 11 inch dd on the Omega...Good Luck....Markmac
