My Dad recently passed away and left me one of his Detectors the Gamma 6000,He was a die hard Teknetics fan,He bought the 6000 new but got sick and was never able to use it before his passing last year..So yesterday i thought i would give it a try and to my dismay it seems to have a problem..When i turn it on the display will show funny characters and try to come on..Then if i hit the power button again it will come on but if i bump the coil over anything tit will go off by the slightest tap over the ground..Or if it gets a very strong signal the display will go off and then come back on..The only thing i done was put in a fresh 9v battery,Could using the wrong typee of 9v batt cause these issues?Any help appreciated before i send it for repair Thanks

It sounds like it was sitting at an awkward angle somehow and the lcd has settled in a strange way. I dropped a teknetics accidentilly on its side one day and it hit a tile floor. It took about 3 days for the screen to come back around and look normal. I also would make sure you have placed the battery in correctly as well. Make sure the coil cable is in tightened up good and sit it up against the wall for a day or so with the arm cuff leaning on the wall while the coil is flat on the floor in an up right position. If that does not help after a few days then I would probably send it in to see if first texas can do something about it and it being your dads and now you have it, it may still be under warranty. I too have a Teknetics Gamma 6000 and it is a great coin machine !
I know this is a late reply and maybe you have already resolved the problems outlined in your June 29, 2013 post. If not, maybe the following will help.
Perhaps this is obvious, but check the tightness of the coil cable tightening ring where the cable connects to the control box. Also, be sure that the "knurled knob" is tight on the coil bolt....... this can become loose over time as we frequently adjust the angle of the coil to keep it parallel with the slope of the ground. If the coil is shaking even an imperceptible amount, this might be the cause of erratic visual display.
Regarding the use of the correct battery, the manual says "The detector requires a single 9V ALKALINE battery. Do not use ordinary zinc carbon batteries. Do not use "Heavy Duty" batteries."
I bought a 4-pack of "Thunderbolt Magnum" Alkaline 9V batteries at Harbor Freight recently for $4.79 with a 20% off coupon (Regularly $5.99). That figures out to $1.20 per battery. After I got home, I started thinking about the word Magnum, wondering if these batteries would be considered Heavy Duty. So I called Teknetics at 1-800-413-4131 and one of their employees, William, Ext.#112, checked and said these were OK to use in the Gamma.

I'll just chime in to say that using carbon zinc batteries must be avoided. The voltage on those is too high, but with any load, it will quickly drop. They;ll work fine in much older detectors, but not at all in the modern microprocessor designs we use today,

At the same time, they also sent me a FREE Arm strap (My Gamma didn't normally come with one.).
The folks at Teknetics/First Texas Products L.L.C. know how to keep a customer happy !
