Gamma at the beach

At Gulf Shores/Biloxi beach with the Gamma 6000. The detector performed well. GB@00 and DISC@20 SENS@99 but did go down to 94. VERY little falsing or anything detrimental. In fact I thought is was messing up because it was to quiet. There was NO trash there. I found a couple of aluminum cans a foot or better down, and a couple bits of aluminum siding a foot or better down. I finally sight found the quarter and used it to test the detector by burying it at least six inches deep at the water line. The Gamma worked flawlessly. Loud and strong beep.I was expecting lots of trash but this beach was clean.

The copper penny is a 1978 and it was encrusted. Once it started breaking off I did the rest. The penny is paper thin and that is a new thing for me. It was a neat thing to do and I learned something new about the Gamma so It was a time well spent. This detector keeps getting better and better! Hunted about an hour while the wife and sister n law and kids went shopping.

Take care and HH!

Nice Capt. Look forward to the next time, you go beach hunting and can show us more. I hunted with another detector for years and didn't know what I was missing until I went to the beach. Be safe going home and enjoy your vacation.

Monte, I was using d4. I did notice that on the zinc pennies the tones were solid but erratic, a by product of the environment where they were found no doubt. It didn't even occur to me to try d1 or d2 which as soon as I read your question seems painfully obvious. A much better choice considering the location. Live and learn I guess. I would have used d2 if I had thought about it. I am so used to using d4 in my coinshooting that the startup routine progressed without thinking. Which would you use and why? Is it best to dig it all at a beach or would using d2, to single out iron be a better choice? I know a lot of it is situational but if you could offer words of wisdom regarding your approach to it and why you do it that way I am more than willing to soak it up. Thanks for any advice in advance.

Great job Capt! Were you using the Gamma in wet sand? If so, how was the transition from dry to wet sand? Did it also perform well in water? Sorry for the questions, but I've pretty much given up using my Delta 4000 in salt water (dry sand it performs fine).

Mick, It was simple as pie. Wet sand, dry sand, in the water... all worked great...in that particular area. I have read that some beaches are different than others. But in Biloxi it was great! All I did was ground grab in the dry sand and as I approached the wet sand it got funny. A simple manual ground balance to 00 (which is where it balanced at) and it was good to go in the surf or wet sand. Mind you, I did not go far, just got the coil wet and submerged to see how it acted or if it changed tone...it did not. It was very quiet! I was happy to say the least. Don't worry about the questions, don't mind at all. Also this may be important, I was using the NELS Tornado 12x13" coil. I don't know how the others will work but I really don't think it would make a difference, but I only did it with the tornado coil.
