Gamma finds a Gem token...Nickle for a burger??

Darkflight

New member
Was out today & I really am enjoying my Gamma.

I had a very nice day on quarters-one junk ring & no silver. But the coin total was impressive with a lot of dimes & about 6 nickles. 4 Wheaties also...

Found this token for 5 cents trade. It is from the "Gem" in Olympia Washington. It took a few searches but I found mention of such an establishment from an article dated 1904 (Olympia Record 22 Nov.)

I also found some odball oldies I posted in the Whatzit forum. All these were in the "Zinc" range but heald a steady VDI. The Zincolns tend to bounce VDI #'s a lot & I tend to pass on those near the surface. Dug one at 7" wich stinks but I dig a lot less of them nowadays. In this area a zinc VDI deep is ussually an old wheatie so I dig 'em,

Stock coil & in most areas I can get 93+ on the sensitivity, Also very happy how the unit handles EMI. Many powerlines & underground utilities.Always use 1 tone as I set min disc @ 44 so 2 tone is the same. I use the rheostat sound to "ping" targets & size them fast. Foil & most junk won't "ping". It is a technique I learned using my Tesoro & I guess other super fast response detectors will resond similarly on solid targets. Very usefull when sorting through a lot of potential targets.

One thing I wish they would change-Move the power switch. With gloves I turned off the unit twice today by accident when pinpointing. Minor complaint but still...

Cheers!!

Never in my lifetime.

cool find!!!!!

i like the token

When I found that old newspaper quote that mentioned the Gem & had that line-I figured that was it.

You have a 10 cent version?. Kinda amazing a burger joint would go to the trouble of making them. And it survived all these years-in a curb strip as you guessed.

I get grumpy people/happy people working the areas. I have been told it has been hunted. And indeed the easy targets are rare. Also a lot of soil has been replaced.

I met a gent who had been on the cover of an early Treasure magazine using a Compass. Very nice gent & I tried talking him into firing it up & coming along. He had a one year coin/jewlery total displayed on a table in the picture that was-shocking.

One guy stood by me-in a pinstripe suit with a cell glued to the ear. I kept busy & neatly(always neatly)retrieved 2 targets. He wouldn't look at me when I paused-or talk so I just kep going & he walked off after 3 minutes of this.OhhhKayyy but just say Hi dude.

I carry a sheet of flexible plastic for the soil.My towel was getting too ugly & heavy so I fashioned the plastic one.Being neat is my foot forward for the grumpy people. If they complain I move on cheerfully.

Last but not least I stumbled onto a sidewalk tearout!!-The guys working said sure beep away!!!My 1st sidewalk tearout in an old area!!

NADA ZIP ZILCH....
oh well.

Cheers!

Hey Darkflight, I have found that if you max the sens out it is only unstable until you start swing the coil,(in areas without EMI) once it is moving it quiets down, but obviously when you stop to dig a target it gets noisy again, so it is up to you to decide how you want to use it. Just thought I would throw that out there. Congrats on the finds man...I love my Gamma. Glad to see others using them too.

Good job on your token. I always like these unique finds, especially when you can identify them. Just had a chance to take my new gamma to the front yard this past weekend. Found a target, dug a hole, filled with water. Kind a SOGGY still. The weather just isn't cooperating here in IL. Can't wait to get out in the big field. Anyway, good job and happy hunting!
