Garrett Ace 250 for first Detector? Opinions?

I've read through most of the Ace 250 threads on here, but still have a couple of questions. I have been hunting with my grandma's White's Coinmaster 4000 D Series 2 machine from the 80's. Being an analog detector, it's tough trying to ID targets based solely on sound (other than solid or breaking tones). I have not played with a Digital detector, but want to upgrade soon.

The 250 is in my price range for a new detector at this point. I would love to have the White's XLT, but that will have to wait for now.

Does this machine do well on say 5-6" deep silver mercs?

I have seen posts where it doesn't distinguish between deep iron and halves very well. What would be the Pro's/con's in your opinion?

Sorry for the bother gang. Just want to make sure I'm getting a decent detector that will perform OK on things such as smaller silver in the mid depth range, and perhaps smaller items such as rings, etc. Most of my silver has been coming from about 5-6" here recently.

Best detector in it's price range, meaning that it isn't cheap, it means it costs less for features found on detectors costing much much more. If you want more depth, get the large coil. It should have no problems getting silver dimes at 5-6 inches, but that also depends how much mineralization there is. There is no answer to how deep does it go. There are just too many variables that play into the ability of a search coil to constantly get the same depth.

5-6 inch silver should present no problem for the 250 and with the larger coil - a cinch. I have dug quarters in bark chips at ten inches with the 250 and standard coil. Even the 4.5 inch Sniper gets 6-7 inches. Course everything depends on your soil conditions and operator expertise. The 250 will be quite a few steps ahead of the old "bread box" White. It's the hottest selling detector on the market and for good reason. The archives on this forum are loaded with 250 info, enough to keep you busy for some time. Oh yeah!That Ace 250 is a coin magnet!It's definitely the best detector for the price. It's very user friendly with good depth and discrimination. Best of luck to you whichever detector you choose. Happy Hunting!
