Thanks for the memories. I had the Garret Deep Seeker and it looked just about like the one in your picture. I bought mine in about 1981. I found some nice relics with it. I had the 6', (sniper coil), and the 8', & 10'. Coils. This detector went deep.

Does it turn on and beep ?
Machines a bit old. Some components in it can go bad with time. Like capacitors.

Hey RC,
What kinda planes you fly.

Awesome I'll download it sure it'll help me out a little bit I can't wait to get out there and find something even if it's a rusty nail 😉
The tones and volume of sounds is the secret to those machine's.
Listen closely.
You'll hear subtle differences between targets.

Buy some silver value coins.
All denominations.
Any pawn shop will usually have a good selection.
( I hit pawnshops after Christmas.
College kids get rid of nice tablets and laptops around that time)
Practice on the items in your yard.
Old coppers and all the jewelry in the house and family.
Just scan the ground before you put coins down.
All metal mode is best for that no discrimination !
Put coins on top of ground two feet apart.
Listen closely like your favorite music.
In time it will be your happy joi joi music.
One gold ring.
And your stuck in our world of dreams.

Learn to ground balance/GB.
You'll have terrible luck if you don't.
LISTEN TO THE SOUNDS. AND DEPTH OF SOUNDS.
Learning on the beep and dig machines.
You'll have a better understanding of the digital machines you may upgrade to.
Weight is the main reason us oldfarts upgrade.
Any machine you may upgrade to.
Research deeply.
Make certain it has the tonal quality's of what your use to.
Good Luck Nubee ...

I disagree. Those old Garretts can still hunt as long as it turns on and beeps over metal. That was a high end machine at one time. Is there better detectors on the market? There will always be better detectors on the market no matter how old or new your detector is. I would give it and your grandson a whirl and see how it goes. If he's anything like my grandson, he will get bored and distracted easily and that would be the end of that.

I'd say practice with it before going out.
Put coins and jewelry on the ground one at time.
Trashy stuff too. Rusty nails and pieces of foil.
See how it reacts. Learn it.
Before testing.
CK the ground doesn't have other targets.
Clean ground for testing.
CK the ground with all metal.
Or pinpoint mode which is all metal.
Keep us posted on your progress.
Good Luck

That is a VLF/TR design; in VLF mode you can ground balance but you can't discriminate, in TR mode you can discriminate but can't ground balance. It was made 1978-79 and sold for $329 with 2 coils ($1600 in 2025 dollars).
In its day it was a decent detector, but Bounty Hunter & White's had already introduced motion VLF disc models and VLF/TR was on the way out. It runs at 5kHz so it's better for silver, not so much for jewelry and nickels and useless for nuggets. It uses (6) 9V batteries and is a bit of a battery pig so it can be expensive to operate. Personally, I'd value it at $25 and only as a wall-hanger. The cheapest Minelab or Nokta models will run rings around it.

I love old detectors but I'm going to have to agree with Laplander and Carl said, get something like the xterra pro and you will have a much easier start to your metal detecting journey. In fact,I will go further than that, get an xterra pro and it will serve you well for years as not only will it perform just as well inland as any other machines on the market (in reality),it is also a fantastic machine at the beach. It is light, fully waterproof and very easy to use.As Odans mentioned also, old electronics do not always perform at their peak so it could be difficult to get the best from this machine.
Enjoy whatever you decide to do.
