Garrett sea hunter II

anyone use this machine? I'm looking to buy a saltwater detector for under $700 and this one looks good. If you know of any other good choices, feel free to share! XD

I have the Sea Hunter and love it. Have not been out much work keeps getting in the way. I am hoping to get out more this coming week. From what I have learned it goes deep and not a big learning curve.

Yep, used and endorsed by me, back when I started the game, in Jul. '04-Jan '06. Huntress and I used the units (3) exclusively my 1st 2 seasons of hunting. Don't count on it being a discriminator though. It is a PI and will find every piece of metal out there. If you decide on one, PM me and I'll set you up for gold mode! It is noisy, as most PIs are, when a wave passes over, you have to stop your swing and let the wave pass, as the threshold rises, with the mineralization in the passing wave.
These action photos are circa 2004-2005. It is a good 1st choice, but get ready for a workout!

...very noisy/unstable and even though it sported a Disc knob, I just never was able to make it discriminate much of anything.

I more than paid for it the first summer I had it and stored it for two years. I brought it out of storage and the batteries had killed the machine. I never broke the factory seal on the machine. I was under the impression that it would void the warranty. Can't remember. That was a long time ago.

Personally I'd buy a used excal before I'd buy a new Seahunter II. The excal will allow youto skip over the junk a lot better. With the seahunter you will be digging E V E R Y T H I N G. I'd use a Fisher 1280 before I'd use a Seahunter. I'd better backtrack. I have used neither in salt water (only fresh water) so take what I say with a grain of (you guessed it) SALT.

It would be a decent back-up I guess, if you could get a great deal on it.

Get the best equipment you can afford and then learn it inside and out. It is a capable machine but you will have to work harder and longer if it is your main machine.

I have one and use it in the salt water of the left coast of Florida. In the past 5 weeks, mostly weekend 4 hour hunts, I've pulled in 8 earrings but no gold yet. I got some clad off the dry sand. I'm still on the learning curve and the machine knows more than me at this point. Am I happy with it, yes.

I have tried a few settings, 6 on the elim knob, at std disc, 0 on the elim knob at discreet disc. and several points in between. Today it's gonna be 0 and discreet. I'll post again after the hunt.

Yeah the main reason i want to get one is to use it key west, so large waves arent too much of a problem. You ever go down to the keys with it? Your input was alot of help, ima go right ahead and buy one.

Hi Fellow Hunters,

I tend to prefer Garretts equipment, however I have a water hunting friend that has a Whites Beachhunter Pro that has been tearing up the gold supply with it. Lots of digging, but user friendly.

I havn't used it, but would like to try one one day for comparasons sake. They have several interesting machines, but unless you are able to try them it's hard to make a decision.

GL&HH Friends,

I have one and used it lots in the fresh water. I don't think the discriminate really works all that well. I have found lots of good things with it and all the time I used it I was in the dive mode. My batteries died also. It was out of warranty so I clipped off the plastic tell tale and replaced the batteries with new Ni-Cads. Works great. If I had to do it today, I'd replace the Nicads with NiMH batteries. It's really simple to change batteries. Open it like a footlocker, replace the batteries, clean all the surfaces where it closes, examine the "O" ring, put some silicone on it and snap it shut. Mine has never thought of leaking. I haven't been much deeper than 20' with it but at 20' theres alot more pressure on it than when wading.
I got a used Excalibur for $500. Might want to compare the two and wait for a reasonable deal on an Excal. One other expense you'll have before it is over is a good scoop. Don't forget that. I have a diver's small mesh bag I clip on whether diving or wading and throw my finds into it. Didn't cost as much as some of the goodie bags advertised on various dealer sites. Water hunting is fun!

todays' results: $1.23 American which equals about 68 cents in Euros. No jewelery but I did find a bunch of broken up pieces of crabtraps, a floating can bottom that was incomplete and had me moving way too much, and three sunshade tiedown stakes. Then the rain came. Oh, I did find a big farking spoon someone must have used to build sandcastles.

I worked in 0 elim and discreet for two hours, the difference is the chirp of the target, from what I understand discreet requires the coil to move constantly while std can be stationary. I varied the settings the last hour and a half but didn't find much difference in eliminating bottlecaps, pulltabs or crabtrap pieces. I'm gonna keep working this thing and I'll let ya all know what works for me.
