Garrett verses Xterra

how many avid Garrett uses have used the xterra 70?? I had a chap in town come to me the other day with an xterra 70 with no idea how to use one,or detector of any sort,, and to be honest the xterra was a bit different for me to,,quite spoilt with the Garrett's,, but I asked him if he would leave it with me for a week or so, which he did(I own my own shop so his trust was high)I have been swinging it now for about 3 weeks and have mixed feelings on the machine, as it works a bit better in some places then my 1350,, but in others is a bit hard to work,,it's does not handle trash at all and to be honest it does not take much clutter to make it go crazy, but depth is quite good, and I liked the hole number scale bit,, I found the pinpoint to be very similar but not having profiling or sizing was hard as the pinpoint would not give a good idea of size when moving over the target,,the prospecting mode does not interest me yet so left it for now but it seems easy enough,,don't think I will run out and buy one for the way i like to hunt but in more open going I would consider it as a second machine

cheers Roger

Hi Roger
I'm an X-Terra fan as well as a Garrett one. They have a lot of similarities. I actually prefer the audio and numeric system of the X-Terras.
If you're interested, I've just written a post to a new X-Terra user over on the X-Terra forum, that might help out your mate. Also Digger has just written a 13 page document all about how to use the X-Terra. He wrote it to be a book for new users of the X-Terra. He decided to put it on the forum rather than as a book he could sell. He has pinned it to the top of the page on the X-Terra forum. Also pinned at the top of that forum is FAQFAQ. It is full of tips on how to use the X-Terra.
The VCO pinpoint can to a point, tell you if you have a screw cap or a coin, by the intensity of it (if the target is in the top 3 inches). You'll find the prospecting mode is very helpful in sizing targets. I like using it with the 6in concentric coil, as I can have a pretty good idea of what is a goldie and what's a screw cap.
Anyway, this is a Garrett forum, so I won't go on.:nono::devil:

me and my son had Garrett's for a while. i still have my ace 250, don't use it a whole lot but refuse to sell it. i brought my son a gti1500 and even got him a sun-ray for it. it was a nice setup. he used it for quite a while until i noticed him stretching his back alot. the weight of the gti was getting to him. he finally put the battery pack on his belt. having that battery pack on his belt was a pain in the a**. i finally sold the gti and brought him a xterra 70. he loves the xterra because it is light and high tech. well never go back to those heavy top of the line Garrett's. i can honestly say that the Garrett gti's and the xterra 70 are pretty much the same performance wise. if Garrett ever gets rid of those heavy detectors and comes out with a new light weight high tech detector i will be the first to buy one.

Yeah, that xterra is awesome. I don't own one, but I've played around with 'em in the field, swappin' out with other people just for fun. I love the way you can change the search coils and get different frequencies. Great coin, jewelry machine as well as prospectin' machine. Those Aussie's make some really great prospectin' equipment. Both the Garrett GTP 1350 and Minelab Xterra 70 have their good points. Here's a link to a side by side comparison from KellyCo.(actually 705 not 70)

Happy Hunting!:)
