General question on reales

How's it going everybody. I haven't been detecting in 4 months so I don't have anything to show but I was going through some of my stuff and I have a few pieces of broken reales. Did they used to break them on purpose or something? I was just wondering why so many people find them in broken pieces. Any ideas? I never find any other coins like this.

The Real was often divided into pie-shaped wedges or pieces to make change; an eight real coin, for example, could be cut into eight pieces valued at one Real each. Each of these pieces was referred to as a "bit," which was a wedge-shaped piece of silver equal to 1 Real in metal weight and monetary exchange value. Currency was based on the price of silver, and the colonists generally used the Spanish milled dollar over other forms of silver currency. The Spanish Real was favored because it had a milled edge which would deter the shaving of silver from the edge of the coin.

Hay Bud give it some time weve found a few but you should be hunting in colonial areas. You never know when one might appear. We hunt only very early sites 1700-1800 hds such as home sites in fields and woods.Corn -bean fields after the crops are off but all ways with the farmers permission..If you live in a rule area chances are you may be able to find some nice sites That are in fields the coins and relics will be spread out so don;t give up it takes a lot of work. But worth it when you make that great findLook for broken glass and early square head nails then your in the zone Good hunting .Pipes:detecting::canadaflag:
