I took it to work and we looked at it under a microscope. It appears to be some sort of bronze alloy. It is really tough and does not bend easily nor will it melt if you hit it with a solder iron. It was definately some sort of jewelery because under the microscope you can really see the broken loop where it hung from a chain. Maybe it is a fake gold nugget jewelery piece. Good luck out at Hampton. I hope the storm opened up some good troughs for ya. I'd be there if I could.....

It looks like low Karat gold to me which would also behave just as you describe. I would get an acid test done just to make sure!

ps IDing metals can be a swine and I still occasionally get caught. Most recently with a small wristwatch back which turned out to be 9K gold despite being completely black!
