Getting the itch for a new machine.. :detecting:

Getting the itch for that new detector smell My Ace 250 get's the call 90% of the time. I have heavier more pricey machines but the Ace 250 get's the job done. Sure there have been some fancy offerings recently by others. But I'm a simple guy. I don't need fancy gadgets to tell me NOT to dig. I want a strait forward machine. But you know how special it is to come home and see that box on your porch. The anticipation makes you feel like a kid again. I would like to have that feeling again soon. Maybe for Christmas? Maybe by Spring? I am hoping Charles has a super duper Ace 250 PRO model ready soon. I challenge you Garrett engineers to get on here and throw us a bone! Charles -your welcome too!

I know what you mean. I just bought the Vaquero. Its SO different
from the Ace. I just got a chance to take it out today. We've had
a lot of rain.

But the rain stoped so I took the Vaquero out for a spin.
Its going to take a bit of getting used to. I balanced like the
manual said, but finding a spot with no metal wasn't easy.

The first hour I set the threshold where I could hear it in the
back ground. Its about as annoying as listening to the Ace go
ding, ding, and dong during the hunt.

There were no deep targets of any value. What deep targets there
were turned out to be deep crushed cans.

I set the discrimination one mark past pull tabs. I din't find many
of them. I did dig lots of bottle caps though. Dozens in fact. It would
come in as a good target so I dug and it was a bottle cap or a piece
of crushed soda pop can.

Finally I decided to hunt in all silent mode; I've never done that before.
What a difference that makes. I was surprised that the machine only
sounded off on good targets, or usually they were good targets. I still
got alot of bottle caps and a couple of pull tabs.

I noticed that quite frequently the discrimination knob would change on
me. Some how I must have been accidently touching it because several
times when I looked it went from one mark past pull tab all the way to Max.
I was afraid I might have missed some coins while in Max so reset it and went back
over the area again just in case. I still seemed to find coins even in Max.

Pinpointing is going to take some time as well. The Vaqureo is different than the Ace.
I have to X the target in all metal pinpoint mode ,and usually if its a coin its easy to
do but sometimes I'm still off a bit when I go to dig. I used my Garrett Propointer to verify that I had
actually pinpointed correctly . Almost all the targets were coming in at 1 to 2 inches.

Like the Ace you can tell if its a large target and usually its a piece of junk
or crushed soda can. I dug a few just to verify that I was right.

I am surprised at how many quarters showed up. Usually I find tons of pennies but
not this time. Also Dimes were not showing up as frequently as with my Ace.
Maybe there were none to be found today. I did find four of them I think.I did find a lot of junk
not shown in the pictures.

I tried MDing in All Metal but there is just so much junk in the parks; it's not worth it.
I switched back to discrimination silent mode and did ok. This will be a good relic and coin machine.
It will be interesting to see how it does at this old town I have been detecting in with my Ace and MXT.

Tomorrow, Sunday if it doesn't rain again I'm gping to go back over the area I detected
with the Ace and see if I missed anything. The Vaquero is really a nice machine and deep, I'll
give it that.

Garrett needs to gert with it and get some more coils, maybe an 8 inch concentric. That
would help improve the depth.

Heres what I picked up today first time out with this detector. The Ace is still a good machine though.
But I bet your talking about buying a new Garrett machine, arnt you? :)-)

I am waiting on a Garrett machine. I don't want a 4 pound monster either. I have had a Compadre and Silver uMax. I consider them "beep dig" machines. Mostly because I got tired of thumbing the disc knob. I like the Ace because it can be a beep dig machine. Plus I can visually disc targets if I get lazy or run out of time. I found the Ace deeper than the uMax too. Tone ID is great on the 250 also compared to others.

Great medal! It must be sterling. One of my favorite things to find.

I'm hoping for a new high end machine from Garrett to satisfy my own itch. Must have imaging. Deeper detection in discriminate mode. Adjustable frequencies. Perhaps notch and VDI combined. Lighter than my 2500 by at least a pound. Trigger pinpointing. USB connection to computer for setup? If it's compatable with my 2500 coils that would be a bonus.

I'd like one with a built in clock and timer too.

Chris

As long as it's under 3 pounds. If they can put all that crap in a cell phone then they can do it in a detector. Keep it low cost too!

Rumor has it that one will come out this fall some time. I wish to hell they would hurry up. I know the 250 is selling like hot cakes but they can't ride that wave forever.

Bill

I want adjustable operating frequencies from 1 to a 100 plus other important goodies and knobs instead of digital crap for accurate and crucial adjustment.

Bill

The Ace 250 is a good as any and better than most. But it don't smell new anymore. Ace 250 Pro would have a larger ID for older eyes. Ground balance and back light. That's All I want.

what about dig your find, and get you a ice cold one.:beers:

You're a man after my own heart. Although I don't have an itch for a new machine, I would buy an upgraded Ace again if Garrett's softened up the tones on it. A back light would be real sweet too. I'm not worried about the ground balance feature myself, as I found that the Ace handles itself really well in that department anyway. The Ace is an absolute killer on our Aussie $1 and $2 coins! and it pinpoints better than anything else I ever used. If only the abrupt audio didn't drive me to sell it.:nopity:
My favourite machine is the 1500 armed with the DD scorcher coil. It's way better than the imaging coil for recovery speed and telling what targets are what. Like you said, the discriminator between the ears is far better than the ones in the control box that tell you to dig or not.
Mick Evans.

Yeah-an Ace with just the straight high tones for coins-or maybe a choice like on the older detectors between belltone or high tone. That's really where the problem is with newbies, anyway. On detectors with the high tone, you get a sort of bweep or mixture of tones that's quick and short on the questionable targets and don't notice the commotion as much. With the belltone, it kinda makes the detector sound constipated:rofl: or like WWIII in some coin spills.

I kind of like the bell tone. I guess I'm just used to it. Sometimes I would like 2 tones. But it does great for a $200 dollar machine! I'm not dissatisfied with the 250. Just really wondering what Charles is soldering up in his garage? Better not be a wooden machine!

I agree with with your list of wants Khouse......I added to a thread awhile back my wishes for a detector. I figured the Ace was plenty good enough for finding the stuff but they could come out with a Boomer model. (as in Baby Boomer) Bigger screen for those ageing eyes, volume control on the unit. I am getting deafer from the Ace than I am from the mill I work in. Back light.
I have the need for that new detector smell also.
Just keep reading others posts to see if something strikes my fancy but it hasn't happened yet.

Yeah the 1500 is my favorite with any coil. It's just a great coinshooter but then that's what it was designed for.

Bill

You can reduce the volume one the Ace by puting a couple of layers of insulation tape over the speaker whole. it worked great. If that is too quiet, just uncover a few holes.

I always use volume controlled head-phones but at times when taking the units off or putting them on one of the controls get spun a bit. BONG!!!!!!
We metal hunters look dorky enough as it is without walking around with a piece of duct tape anchoring our control buttons.
A bit of deafness can be a good thing.....I am married y'know.
