Yesterday I took my X-Terra 705 for it's daily walk through the park. At about 4pm, I was approached by 3 young people about 12 - 14 yrs old. Now being of the highly educated breed - given todays technology & modern education techniques, the conversation went something like this.
"What are you doing Bro?"
Testing out a metal detector I replied.
"What does it find?"
I'm looking for coins & rings, I said.
The eldest bloke possibly with the highest IQ????? turned to one of the other boys & asked for a coin. His friend handed him a 5 cent piece. He then threw the 5 cents on a very clear patch of dirt where a blind man could have found it.
"Find that Bro," he said.
I bit my tongue & decided to play the game to see where it was going & swung the detector over the top of the 5 cents.
The X-Terra gave a beep, gave a TID number of 8 & gave 1 arrow showing the depth to be at the surface.
"Well did it find it Bro?" I was asked.
Sure did I replied.
"How deep is it?"he asked
The detector says it is right on the surface I replied & showed him the depth gauge on the X-Terra.
"It works well Bro - you can keep the 5 cents." and off they walked!!
I continued on with my detecting & about 5 minutes later, I was interupted by another you voice.
"Excuse me Mr, what are you doing?" A very well dressed young man about the age of 10 asked me.
I'm just detecting for some coins I replied.
"How do you know when you have found a coin?" he asked.
I waved the coil past my left knee & right hip & the detector beeped. I explained that I had spent some time in hospital having reconstructions & hip replacements and the metal detector was picking up the pins & metal hip.
"I know what it's like to be in a hospital as I was born with a heart defect & spent a lot of time in hospital." he said.
Did they fix the problem I asked.
"No, they have done all they can at the moment but the problem is still there. " he replied.
Suddenly my problem seemed to evaporate - I have had over 50 yrs to enjoy life.
I swung the detector a few times to try & find a target for the young bloke. The machine gave a beep & showed a TID number of 14, indicating that I had possibly found a ten cent piece.
Let's see what this is I commented & dug a 10 cent piece up.
I handed it to the young bloke & said it's all yours. (I would have preferred a higher amount)
He took the 10 cents, studied it & offered it back.
No keep it I said.
A very big smile came to his face & he replied "are you sure?"
Certainly I replied, feeling guilty that I hadn't found anything bigger as yet.
"Gee thanks Mr." he replied & took off on his bike as happy as anyone I had seen that day. You would have thought that I given him a Gold nugget.
GOD FORGIVE ME WHEN I MOAN.
