Going crazy with rifle shells!

I have permission to hunt an old army site that was closed by BRAC some years ago. The site has been in use for various things since the early 1800's. The centerpiece is a very large parade ground-gotta be lots of good stuff there! Biggest problem is old brass rifle shells! Zillions of them everywhere and they ring from upper 70's into the mid 80's. Any good ideas for setting to help sort through the brass and get to the good stuff?

These shells usually will not have a solid single tone because of the two different metals that they are made of; the casing and the primer are of two different metals and if you listen you can hear it in the tone. But be careful, if there is a good target with something next to it you may hear tones similar to the shell.

If your are digging more of a particular brass VDI # try to (specifically and as narrow as possible) notch it out. That's about all you can do to minimize them.

The biggest problem is that most are starting to disintegrate so there are bits and pieces and may or may not have the primer. The numbers also range; so guess there isn't much else to do except cuss them.

Well, the good thing is you have the opportunity to hunt there.

That's a tough situation to deal with. Maybe you can tell by the tone if there is something "mixed" in with the brass cases. Good luck!
