When I first got broke in by my Uncle, ( late 90's ). All I heard from those guys was I was too late for the Silver boom. They really had some stories. My Uncles first machine wss called a Bofords, I think. Someone correct the name if it's wrong. Before I got my first detector I seen his Bofor hanging on the wall. The coil was very large. I asked him how he liked it, said " not much". Anyway said at that time you didn't need much. If I remember right he said it beeped on everything and was pretty shallow. Again if someone knows better ,please set the record straight. Him and a buddy raided many parks, along side walks ,gravel grassy parking lots. Said the easy stuff had already been plundered in many places. At the time he was swinging a Garrett I believe a GTA I think. When he moved up next, he got Whites XLT. HE was very happy with that one. Sadly our last hunt together, I got permission for us to hunt inside large city pool.. We had a ball, he was somewhere early 80's. So many coins at times we just stayed on our knees to scan. Now the sad part, Unk had started to slip from dementia , I didn't know. So after that hunt I dropped him off at his truck about 3 miles from his home. Next time I saw him, he said it t him 3 hrs to get home. Didn't know where he was. Got to admit, it's breaking me up as I relate this story. When I went to his funeral, his best hunting pal was there and he had that far away look coming on. I'm 77 and still ( plugging ). But no question the ice is getting thin.
