Gold Detector Choice Question

Hello,
I enjoy nugget hunting in AZ, CA, and NV. The ground varies from mild to hot, but much of it is mild to medium. I have been considering a Deepstar that has been modified by Mr. Bill to a Deepstar II - would this be a good choice for me? Or should I select the Gold Quest? Does the Gold Quest discriminate out Iron? Please tell me why one is better than the other if possible. I also coin hunt (have a Minelab Explorer XS) and I nugget hunt with a Fisher Gold Bug 2. I want to have a detector that will go deep for the larger nuggets. I have considered the Minelab SDs and GPs, and the new Garret. but I have had carpal tunnel surgery on both hands and detector weight and ease swing are critical factors for me. I do not need underwater capability. Thank you.

The Deepstar may not be a good choice. The Deepstar does respond a lot to "hot rocks", and I doubt you want to put up with that.
The Goldquest SS would be a better choice, and it

Thank you Mr. Bill. Will the Goldquest SS go deaper than the Goldbug 2 under like conditions in your opinion - or are they about the same? If possible, can you explain briefly the ground conditions you consider in your resonse? In your response, are you saying that the Golddquest SS would compliment my Gold Bug 2? I am looking for a detector that I can use when I want to find the larger deeper nuggets that the Fisher might not find. Will the Goldquest do the trick or should I just stay with the Fisher and use a larger coil? I am concerned about the larger coils on the Gold Bug 2 reading more ground and thusmaking it more difficult to hunt in hot ground. I think I will give you a call if that is all right. Thanks.

You have questions that need answers I agree, but you may have a misunderstanding of just what detectors can or can not do. PI

In heavy black sand deposits...such as found in creek beds...the PI will blow the Goldbug away. VLF"S just cannot handle heavy deposits of iron sand well at all. The Goldquest will love these areas.
This realy is the main reason I see for owning a PI...black sand deposits stop a VLF in it's tracks...or will seriously limit it's depth as you will have to drop the sens so much to remain stable.
The Goldbug will be more sensitive to smaller gold though and in ground that has low minerals it will operate better than the GQ will.
The GQ will find bigger nuggets deeper that the Goldbug will if the ground allows. Both a PI and A VLF will have ground types that they will not operate in. Fortunately it works out that what one won't work in the other will.
The ground affects as related to coils is a funny thing with the PI....don't assume that because a coil is smaller it will be less affected by ground..just the opposite is true in the field.]
The larger coils have been more stable for me that the small ones...in other words I like the 11" better than the 8"...the8" is too unstable in creeks.
