Ron reminded me of this the other day and I thought I'd pass it to all for what it's worth.
A while back I was stuck at a roadblock for construction and got out to stretch. The guy ahead of me also got out and we started to talk. He saw my detector and then told me what he's been doing for some years now.
When he's out deer hunting on his 4 wheeler he always is on the lookout for older roads that are in gold country. On many of these roads there's a metal culvert that goes under the road for water drainage. In these places he always gets down into and checks the riffles in the culvert. On some he has found gold in the dirt and has cleaned them out, taken it home and panned it. He now has 11 ounces so far.
He watches for snakes & animals but does climb in and gets it all. He carries small bags to hold the gold/dirt and climbs way inside them.
The newer culverts have wider, smoother riffles and the gold would be washed along and out of them. The older ones have much sharper riffles that trap the gold.
So next time you are out in the back country and see one give it a check! Steve in so az
