Gold occurrences

G'day guys, just had a thought as I was driving past some known old abandoned gold fields around cairns.
How is it that gold can be found on one side of a mountain (western) and not found on the other side (eastern). Is it a simple case of the old timers not looking which I believe to be highly unlikely or would it be to do with fault lines and pressures and temps and
Such. I know from experience that the same minerals ( quartz, ironstone, granite) are found on both sides.
