HELLO ALL,

First, the Explorer does not make a good gold prospecting detector . . . . just will not hit the small nuggets although hitting a 5+ ounce beauty would be nice.
If you are still set on using the Explorer for doing some nugget hunting, it makes a difference as to how the nuggetts in your area will read as to where you will be hunting. The content / composition of nuggets varies greatly from area to area (not in the same county but differnet areas of the country). Some of the purest gold I have found has been in the Dahlongea area of Georgia.
If you really want to see what to expect from your Explorer, I'd recommend stopping in at a prospecting shop that sells gold in the area you are visiting and see if you can test a few nuggets to see where they read and the type of signal you can expect. Nuggets will not - unless you are talking about LARGE nuggets - read like a coin or ring so you need to know what the difference is and it is impossible to do so over the Internet.
Hope this helps . . .

If I was looking for gold nuggets I'd probably hunt in iron mask around -15

Tony,
You are right in that much discrimination at all will kill your chances for small gold.
The problem with using the Explorer for prospecting is that it just is not able to hit the smaller pieces we find here in the US. A smaller coil will not really help. The WOT coil will actually hit earrings so size of the coil is not as big a factor as it is with concentric coils where the bigger the coil the less sensitive it is to small targets.
I have done a good bit of testing with some of my nuggets and in most cases, can't even get a beep touching the coil (OK, I do not have a lot of 1+ ounce pieces but they are few and far between anyway).
On the other hand, the response you can get using something like a Minelab Eureka or Tesoro Lobo ST makes purchasing one a viable option if you plan on spending much time at all in the gold fields.
Hope this helps,
Andy Sabisch

When it comes to a real small piece of gold jewelry, like a diamond tennis bracelet, the FBS and BBS circuits just do not see it, not even in the pin point modes.

You need something like the X-Terra 70 for best results in the Minelab Line Up.

Other Outstanding Gen Purpose Detectors for finding that elusive small gold jewelry:
White's MXT, M6
Tesoro Tejon (Hottest), Vaquero, Cibola, Tiger Shark, Compadre

I tried Fisher's CZ-7a Pro... wouldn't see the Diamond Tennis Braclet.

White's DFX will, if selected to 15 kHz.

Lobo ST will, but I shy away from the fixed preset ground balance in the discrimination mode, go with the Tejon.

Note: Tried the Sovereign Elite with the Sun Ray 5" and would not see the Diamond Tennis Bracelet, even in pin point mode.
