On the 3Z any hints on the readings of foil and maybe a trick to help find gold. I have read some say they can hear a different sound for gold. Some dig the deeper sounds? I just dig high sounds any help?

Dig almost everything, the best discriminator is a shovel! I have found many silver coins and silver hammered coins (I'm in Germany) signal as trash and pull tabs, some of my better finds sounded like foil! After many finds and signals you will learn the differece between pull tabs and a silver coin on edge. Dig it all until you are confident a signal is iron or aluminium, and then you still can't be sure! HH, Mike

About 1/3 of the gold rings come in at foil..If in pulltab country digging the deep such signals increase your chances..Mike hunts in farmers fields, try digging every signal in a local park and you surely will be banned...so it depends on your area..Some units have audio variances and although most gold rings hit hard a CZ has little or none..

As Bavaria Mike said, if you want gold you have to dig it all. The conductivity (and hence the signal) of foil and a lot of aluminum trash is close or equal to that of a lot of gold jewelry. <STRONG>There is no machine made that can tell you the difference between a gold ring and a aluminum pull tab.</STRONG>

my idea is definitely a non starter in a park! I haven't tried this yet but I think this is a good idea especially if you are snowed in; take a few small containers, something with a lid so you don't spill it, put some dirt in them and bury sample targets i.e. foil, coin, rusty nail, how ever many targets you want, each in it's own container. Even try placing a gold ring and a piece of foil in the same container and coins with foil. Now you have a simulated hunting area you can learn with when you can't get out. Mike hunts a lot of beaches and indeed don't even need a meter as I dig all myself. On land its another story. CZ's have VCO and tough to pick up up any audio variances, while some others have regular pinpoint and differentiating sounds ( audio variances, harmonics, sizing) but although its not a fixed science one can cut down the odds and am sure many have found ways to do this. Lets face it a gold ring weighs many times what a tab does and if one experiments differences can be heard. Not disbuting Mike's statement as indeed no machine can tell you 100 % but indeed one can cut down on the odds. Again on a beach would not even look for any differences as digging is easy, but on land especially in parks any way to cut down the odds is a plus. Have I dug gold rings with a CZ...sure have but they were deep and hit hard. Surely a lead sinker, key which has more weight can fool you every time and actually wish a CZ can a toggle for VCO or regular pinpointing..This subject fascinates me and would like some input. Over the years about the only one that agreed with me was Greg from Transbay as he uses harmonics. Do some experimenting and Fisher do consider the toggle to use VCO or regular pinpointing on a CZ...

Mike believe me have done many tests on cold winter days and all you will get is a ball park evaluation.
Tests shuld be done in the field and even then as mineralizations differ, partially masking etc may not give one a true evaluation. Those that experiment learn and it certainly behooves one to do so to become a better detectorist...

I have no respect for air tests as they prove nothing but I think the dirt in the container with a sample is as close as we can get reasonably without being in the field. Experience in the field is really the best test but what does a person do when that bottle cap sounds good, you have to dig! I was fooled several times today and have to say screw caps are enemy number one! I'm sure you will see some frustrated posts when I get the CZ7A. HH, Mike
