Goldquest large coils

Sirs is it true that that the goldquest cannot run are larger coil than the standard 28cm. 11ins coil also I have heard that the garret infinium also cannot run a larger coil than the standard 10by14ins?

It can run any coil size you want. We only offer up to the 11" size for the unit because of the 10uS. pulse delay. With larger coils one would not be able to set the unit at 10uS. A coil could be made, but to do it would require a lot of extra work, and the assembly would be very critical. Cost would be very high.
Example: If you went to a 15" coil you probably have to run it at no less than 15uS. to get it to operate properly. So the advantage of going to a larger coil would be loss by having to turn down the sensitivity by running at 15uS., or less.

Hi Kris,
Bill is right, it is all but impossible to build a larger coil that will operate at 10 usec. However, like Bill says, you can build and use a larger coil. You just have to increase the delay until it works properly.
I have done this and built up a test mono coil in my 11" by 16" coil housing. I don't' remember what my final delay was, but I think it was around 13 to 14 usec.
I have since decided to build up a DD coil using that same housing but haven't done it so far. My guess is I will be able to obtain something like 12 usec, but that is a guess right now.
I have built a 10" by 14 DD coil and it will operate at about 11 to 12 usec. This is more than sufficient for my purposes.

Hi Kris,
I agree with what Reg and Bill say. A larger coil than 11in would be very difficult to make and run at 10uS, and I suspect that even if it could be done, it would not perform as well. Another factor is that larger coils pick up more electromagnetic noise, that would result in a less smooth threshold.
Eric.
